The owner of a small clothing store has been ordered to change the language of the store’s Facebook page to French by the government of the French-speaking province of Quebec. Quebec has a law to protect French which it estimates is threatened by the prevalence of English in the rest of Canada and the United States.
But hey it's ok, its to PROTECT FRENCH so it must be a good thing.

The government was roundly ridiculed recently for complaining that a restaurant menu included the word “pasta” which is not French but Italian. The government had to backtrack and withdraw the complaint after the story made headlines in Canada and around the world.
Assholes.

What do they mean French is "threatened by the prevalence of English"?

I live in the United States, Northern California... And Spanish is getting bigger and bigger here. I can't decide what language the population speaks. Nor can my government.

Oh man... where to start...

Here in Quebec, the population is mostly French. Everyone is awesome and gets along and all that stuff. But the Parti-Quebecsois here want everything, everything, everything, to be french.

If you sell english books to english people only to people from England from your store in quebec, all of your signs must be in french.

If your business grows beyond a certain number of employees, people must speak french in the workplace.

If you have a restaurant, your menus must be in french, though you can also have english menus. Last year, a famous italian restaurant here was targeted by the language police and ordered to change the word PASTA to the french equivalent... (they chose to fight instead and one their case in the end).

If you are a Quebec business, the landing page of your website must be in french, and your whole site must be in french. You can offer english.

If you have a business in Quebec, you must answer your phone in french. Your voicemail must be in french first, with a "press 2 for English" message.

It just goes on and on and on...

... and oh yeah, REPUBLICANS!! GAARRRRRRrrr.... :)

Quebec businesses cut off from service in English

The provincial government is telling all its ministries and agencies to not communicate in English with businesses or organizations established in Quebec.

The policy is still in the roll-out phase, though some government bodies have already adopted it.

"The administration is to use French exclusively with institutions and businesses established in Quebec," says the 2011 provincial policy paper that the Charest government used to first launch the initiative.

RebelR 02-27-2014 08:06 PM

Real french? Or does it have to be Québécois french?

I think this fits here :1orglaugh

The french laws haven been in place for quite a while. If you dont agree with them, talk to your local deputy to make things change.

Im sure an american board doesnt give a fuck about french canadian laws.

(leave)

I think its wonderful that you are finally taking an interest in the politics of your own country, I wish you would tackle the tougher issues too like moose licensing, discrimination against gay beavers and genetically modified maple syrup.

Why should people be forced to move from their home because of ridiculous laws that amount to nothing more than ethnic cleansing? Quebec used to be almost 50% English and many areas, especially in west Quebec, were predominantly English. My mother was born and raised on a farm in Quebec in a majority English town that was that way for over 150 years. You go there now and you would never know that it used to be an English town except for all of the names on the tombstones.

Why is ethnic cleansing bad everywhere else in the world but acceptable in Quebec?

yep, they are trying to push out english speaking people who's families have been there for generations because they don't fit in the quebec that they want. my girlfriends english speaking family has lived in west quebec for over 100 years but they are viewed as second class to the government. everyone in their area speaks english, yet everything must be in french. its bizarro world.

Lol!! ;)

and I know its strange... For like the past 6 years or so I've found US politics more interesting than Canadian politics. I think I've figured out why. I watch alot of The Daily Show and the Stephen Colbert show. These shows are probably what got me hooked.

You're right.... I'm 100% anglo and the feeling of being second class here because of it is subtle yet persistent... but regardless even if they went full franco here it wouldn't be enough to make me leave. I've always lived in Montreal and have no plans ever to move out.

The only exception might be if Quebec were to Separate from the rest of Canada. This almost happened in the 90's and it was a spooky time to be here...

peace.

There is NO ethnic cleansing in Québec and the laws are the laws and they are NOT ridiculous.

Canada has 10 provinces(states) and 3 territories; and it is officially bilingual. But in practice, everywhere except Quebec, english is spoken.

Anytime a francophone moves outside of Québec, he is expected to conduct all affaires both personal and professional in english. That is how it works. So of an anglophone, in Québec, are similar expectations. He should learn to speak the language instead of expecting to get his ass kissed. Would an American living in Poland, complain that he is required to learn/speak polish ?

English Canadians move to Québec all the time and they take advantage of our subsidised automobile insurance, subsidised perscription drugs, etc.. The rest of Canada doesn't have these social services, because our provicial (and very culturally french) government has more socialist beliefs and practices than english Canada. Unfortunately, many of those who move here do NOT try to intergrate into francophone society and prefer to play the victim of some imagined french canadian genocide conspiracy theory. And any anglophone born in Quebec in the last 50 years, had imbeciles for parents if he failed to learn the french language.

So ignore these english babies crying, over having to learn another language.

In the case of Mr. Prince,

His business benefits from an abondant source of bilingual "dirty little french girls" that are cheaper, better looking and willing to do a lot more than their english counterparts in Ontario. Also he has cheaper rents and a better and cheaper IT infrastructure.

That said, he has nothing really to complain about...so he should either shut up or haul his ass to another province.
