Piers Morgan's CNN show to end amid mediocre ratings
 

Piers Morgan's prime-time talk show on US TV network CNN is to end.

The former Daily Mirror editor told The New York Times it had been "a painful period" for the show, which has suffered lacklustre ratings.

CNN's audience had tired of hearing a Briton weigh in on American cultural issues, he said.

Mr Morgan said he was in discussions with CNN about a new role at the channel following the end of the show, probably in March.

'Run its course'
The 48-year-old replaced veteran host Larry King three years ago and interviewed statesman and celebrities, including ex-President Bill Clinton, and financier Warren Buffett. Oprah Winfrey was his first guest.

But it was his outspoken remarks about gun ownership that have garnered most attention in recent months.

"Look, I am a British guy debating American cultural issues, including guns, which has been very polarising, and there is no doubt that there are many in the audience who are tired of me banging on about it," he told the New York Times.

He said that he would like to do fewer appearances that have more impact.

Interviews with major celebrities and powerful figures, would be "better suited to what I do well", he said.

CNN did not comment on Morgan's future with the channel.

Earlier this month it emerged that Mr Morgan had been questioned by police under caution over alleged phone hacking at Mirror Group Newspapers.

He has always denied any involvement in hacking.

Prior to his move into TV, Mr Morgan was editor at the Daily Mirror newspaper and was sacked in 2004 after the paper published faked photos of British troops abusing Iraqi prisoners.

He went on to become a judge on Britain's Got Talent before joining CNN.

I'm not familiar with him, so I am only questioning this off of the article above… If he was the editor of a newspaper that published fake abuse photos, why on earth would CNN think he was a good candidate to replace Larry King? Is that something that came out later? Even if he knew nothing about the situation, he was the editor, the buck stops with him and surely CNN could have found a better candidate.

Piers Morgan had big shoes to fill in replacing Larry King.

The show just plain sucked.

Horray! He is so fucking irritating I just can't stand it! His best role at the network is to go back to the UK and irritate them.

That guy is an utter dick! Even us Brits hate him.

Larry King sucked to in my humble opinion. The only things he had going for him is that

I am in the UK and have seen some of Larry King shows on cnn.

I thought he was decent.

He had a calm, relaxing way about him. Thats the sort of thing you need.

Piers Morgan's was always an odd choice to me. He is ok for some stuff, but if you want a brit for that show there are some realy good presenters that would have done an amazing job. Jeremy Paxman, Andrew Neil or Andrew Marr are just a few who are amazing. If
Jeremy Paxman had done it ratings would have shot up, as he is just amazing.

Americans couldn't give a shit about his views on guns. For him to suggest his ratings tumbled due to his view on guns means most his viewers were gun nuts/advocates?

I would not say hate, but I do not think this is were he is good at.

He is probably ok on xfactor and things like that.

But even in the UK he has not ever realy been a news presenter (tv).

So I am not sure why cnn took him, unless it was a favoir (as he may have helped them out in the past).

Larry King was a classic. A great interviewer who got anybody he wanted to appear. They should have begged him to not retire.

The show is great. It's Piers Morgan's likeability factor that is dragging down the ship. The guy's a dink and always was, it's no surprise the ratings are sucking wind.

He's not fit to shine Larry King's yellow toenails.
