Another idiot Republican: Utah's Jerry Anderson demands "More Carbon Dioxide"

And the fucking idiots just never stop...

Quote:

Utah Rep: More Carbon Dioxide, Please

Arguing that we need more carbon dioxide, not less, in the atmosphere, Rep. Jerry Anderson, R-Price, has proposed legislation that would limit the state?s ability to regulate emissions of the greenhouse gas.

HB229 narrows the definition of the term "air contaminants," clarifying that "natural components of the atmosphere," including nitrogen, oxygen and other stable, or noble gases, are not pollution.

Anderson?s bill would prevent the establishment of state standards for carbon dioxide below atmospheric concentrations of 500 parts per million. This is a level far above what is currently in the atmosphere, already padded with carbon thanks to two centuries of fossil-fuel burning.

"We are short of carbon dioxide for the needs of the plants," Anderson, a retired science teacher, told the committee overseeing environmental programs in the the state on Tuesday. "Concentrations reached 600 parts per million at the time of the dinosaurs and they did quite well. I think we could double the carbon dioxide and not have any adverse effects."

Such claims are at odds with credible climate science, according to Joe Andrade, a retired University of Utah engineering professor. Carbon levels at 500 ppm would warm the planet and acidify the oceans to a devastating degree, he said.

"We are on a path to double the amount of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere since we started burning fossil fuels. We can all see the chaotic weather that it has already produced," Andrade said. "It?s not toxic to you and me below concentrations of 1,000 or 2,000 [parts per million], but it?s toxic to this planet. Setting an arbitrary upper limit, that is out of the bounds of anything related to planetary stability, is simply bad government."

While Anderson?s climate change skepticism enjoyed a receptive hearing from committee members, they voted to hold the bill.

A key hang up was the noble gas radon, which abounds naturally in Utah and poses an undeniable threat to human health. Also occurring in nature are cyanide and xenon, which can poison people.

"Xenon is a noble gas and it?s an anesthetic. You don?t want to exclude it [from regulation] because you might have a pharmaceutical device that uses xenon. A leak in a confined space could be quite hazardous," Andrade said.

Ozone plays a beneficial role in the atmosphere, blocking ultraviolet radiation, but near the ground this oxygen molecule is considered pollution because of its corrosive properties. The state aims to curb ozone pollution, a component of smog that damages the lungs.

Sort of ... they are called '' conservatives '' a melting of '' reformists '' and '' progressive conservatives '' :

- religious
- wants guns without any control
- hate poors ( cut in all social services )
- it is their way or the hyway
- etc .....

What's even stranger is the guy is a state rep. There are literally thousands of state reps across the United States. Not sure how he always finds this stuff. I saw him mention once that he subscribes to "I'm a Loyal Republican Monthly," must be playing Trojan horse.

How does he find this stuff you ask?
Simple, his TV only gets one channel, MSNBC.

I used to not hate republicans, but damn... it just seems that so many say and do so many rotten things. Are there any good / smart republicans out there? (Yes I know there are idiot democrats too, but there seems to be more idiot republicans able to make too many changes that hurt too many people).

Actually, it was on the CBC news here in Canada. And it's all over lots of other places such as

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/politic...-utah.html.csp

http://www.upi.com/Science_News/Blog...5271392846419/

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/0...n_4811957.html

etc

And really, even if it was only MSNBC that was reporting this, don't you think that maybe, just maybe, people in power like this guy should maybe just start paying some attention to scientists? Or do you not care that assholes like him are responsible for ruining the planet?

He is a low-level state representative of a state with minimal power. I would be shocked if he was responsible for replacing the toilet paper after he used the last square.

The real problem with "news" like this is the same problem that conspiracy theorists have. A conspiracy theorist will have 20, 30, maybe even 50 different conspiracies running around in their head at any given time and they will be telling you about every single one of these conspiracies nonstop. Out of those 50, 5-10 of them could actually be legitimate and something that people should really be looking into. Unfortunately for our theorist friend, nobody is listening to him any longer. The boy cried Wolf one too many times.

If what some low-level gov official proposes makes the news there, you need to turn off your television.

Your view is only made worse by your thinking that assholes like him are the ones responsible for ruining the planet, whatever the fuck ruining the planet means. (earth will be just fine with 2x more carbon dioxide).

Go let off some carbon dioxide and go for a cruise in your v8 camaro instead of getting worked up over some no name Utah state legislator.

1 MYTH Planet earth is currently undergoing global warming

FACT Accurate and representative temperature measurements from satellites and balloons show that the planet has cooled significantly in the last two or three years, losing in only 18 months 15% of the claimed warming which took over 100 years to appear ? that warming was only one degree fahrenheit (half of one degree Celsius) anyway, and part of this is a systematic error from groundstation readings which are inflated due to the 'urban heat island effect' i.e. local heat retention due to urban sprawl, not global warming...and it is these, 'false high' ground readings which are then programmed into the disreputable climate models, which live up to the GIGO acronym ? garbage in, garbage out.

2 MYTH Even slight temperature rises are disastrous, ice caps will melt, people will die

FACT In the UK, every mild winter saves 20,000 cold-related deaths, and scaled up over northern Europe mild winters save hundreds of thousands of lives each year, also parts of ice caps are melting yet other parts are thickening but this isn't reported as much (home experiment: put some water in a jug or bowl, add a layer of ice cubes and mark the level ? wait until the ice has melted and look again, the level will have fallen). Data from ice core samples shows that in the past, temperatures have risen by ten times the current rise, and fallen again, in the space of a human lifetime.

3 MYTH Carbon Dioxide levels in our atmosphere at the moment are unprecedented (high).

FACT Atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, currently only 350 parts per million have been over 18 times higher in the past at a time when cars, factories and power stations did not exist ? levels rise and fall without mankind's help.

4 MYTH Mankind is pumping out carbon dioxide at a prodigious rate.

FACT 96.5% of all carbon dioxide emissions are from natural sources, mankind is responsible for only 3.5%, with 0.6% coming from fuel to move vehicles, and about 1% from fuel to heat buildings. Yet vehicle fuel (petrol) is taxed at 300% while fuel to heat buildings is taxed at 5% even though buildings emit nearly twice as much carbon dioxide!

5 MYTH Carbon dioxide changes in the atmosphere cause temperature changes on the earth.

FACT A report in the journal 'Science' in January of this year showed using information from ice cores with high time resolution that since the last ice age, every time when the temperature and carbon dioxide levels have shifted, the carbon dioxide change happened AFTER the temperature change, so that man-made global warming theory has put effect before cause ? this shows that reducing carbon dioxide emissions is a futile King Canute exercise! What's more, both water vapour and methane are far more powerful greenhouse gases than carbon dioxide but they are ignored.

6 MYTH Reducing car use will cut carbon dioxide levels and save the planet

FACT The planet does not need saving, but taking this on anyway, removing every car from every road in every country overnight would NOT produce any change in the carbon dioxide level of the atmosphere, as can be seen using the numbers from Fact 4, and in any case it is pointless trying to alter climate by changing carbon dioxide levels as the cause and effect is the other way round ? it is changes in the activity of the Sun that cause temperature changes on earth, with any temperature rise causing carbon dioxide to de-gas from the oceans.

7 MYTH The recent wet weather and flooding was caused by mankind through 'global warming'

FACT Extreme weather correlates with the cycle of solar activity, not carbon dioxide emissions or political elections, the recent heavy rainfall in winter and spring is a perfect example of this ? it occurred at solar maximum at a time when solar maxima are very intense ? this pattern may well repeat every 11 years until about 2045.

8 MYTH The climate change levy, petrol duty, CO2 car tax and workplace parking charges are justifiable environmental taxes.

FACT As carbon dioxide emissions from cars and factories does not have any measurable impact on climate, these taxes are 'just another tax' on enterprise and mobility, and have no real green credentials.

9 MYTH Scientists on the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) issue reports that say 'global warming' is real and that we must do something now.

FACT Scientists draft reports for the IPCC, but the IPCC are bureaucrats appointed by governments, in fact many scientists who contribute to the reports disagree with the 'spin' that the IPCC and media put on their findings.
The latest report suggests that the next 100 years might see a temperature change of 6 Celsius yet a Lead Author for the IPCC (Dr John Christy UAH/NASA) has pointed out that the scenarios with the fastest warming rates were added to the report at a late stage, at the request of a few governments ? in other words the scientists were told what to do by politicians.

10 MYTH There are only a tiny handful of maverick scientists who dispute that man-made global warming theory is true.

FACT There are nearly 18,000 signatures from scientists worldwide on a petition called The Oregon Petition which says that there is no evidence for man-made global warming theory nor for any impact from mankind's activities on climate.
Many scientists believe that the Kyoto agreement is a total waste of time and one of the biggest political scams ever perpetrated on the public ... as H L Mencken said "the fundamental aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed, and hence clamorous to be led to safety, by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary" ... the desire to save the world usually fronts a desire to rule it.

Mark, similar arguments can be said about our own Gov't in power. Harper is certainly no friend of any environmentalist by any stretch of the imagination. There's enough fingers to point in our own backyard without having to point them at another country's backyard.

Please Mark, citing the Huffington post is not too smart. Hardly an unbiased news source.

I've always wanted to ask someone such as yourself when you look at the following 3 images.
What is it that you think we humans can do to destroy it?

In the first Earth looks huge.
In the second not so much.
In the third please tell me which little speck is the Earth.
In case you can't identify it is marked with an arrow.

Most things run in cycles as do weather patterns. Yes there is climate change but there is no evidence that it is man made.

Next, I already told you I was selling my Camaro and hope to buy an electric car soon. The difference between you and me is that I've learned that Gas and Oil companies are just simply polluting way too much, in addition to the crap Gas cars put into the air. I really don't enjoy driving any gas powered cars anymore, and I've admitted it. Kindly stop repeating yourself as it makes you look like a twit. Look up pictures of China to get a look at your near future. Look up pictures of the melting ice caps to see the temperature change. And Correlation of solar activity is just that - Correlation. It is not proof that it caused global warming.

That is actually a good question. The answer is, everything. There are billions of humans on the planet and billions of tons of toxic sludge is going into the air and into the water every single day. You may wake up to a sunny day and think everything looks ok, but this is because the damage that is being done by us isn't obvious, and was in the past, happening too slowly to notice.

But now things are moving much more quickly. The icecaps are melting. There are more cars, oil and coal companies pushing more CO2 and other greenhouse gasses into the air, and less forests, farms and plants to take the CO2 out and put it into the ground. This change plus all of the crap going into the oceans is changing the chemistry of the ocean too.

Sure our planet is big - but its not too big that we can't kill it.

The ice caps are melting? Do you remember about 2 months ago the "cruise ship" stuck in the ice at the South Pole. Took 3 or 4 icebreakers to get it out.The irony here is it was a research vessel studying the disappearing ice at the South Pole. You can't make this sh*t up!

As far as the North Pole its more misinformation.
