Quadcopter vs. Hexacopter

Thanks to Mr. Pheer, I'm now finding myself wanting to build one of these things. The questions is...Which type? What are the pros and cons of each? I've read a bit about both but looking for additional educated opinions from those who have actually owned either or.

I'm also open to frame and equipment suggestions.

It will definitely have a GoPro Hero 3+ on it.

You'll get no argument out of me on that topic.

Hexacopter... 2 more motors, 2 more speedcontrols, 2 more props to balance, bigger debris field when you crash, bigger battery needed. Not really needed for lifting a GoPro :)

Simplicity > Complexity

the big plus to a hex is you can lose a motor and itll keep flying plus it will lift more

a quad is generally easier to deal with and anything around the size of a dji phantom should easily carry 900-1100 grams (thats way more than even a hero 2 in the waterproof case weighs)

That's one of the points that has me looking at the hex.

Is there any significant difference in the way they handle? Does one actually out perform the other as far as speed, maneuverability, etc...?

I was just watching a video of a hex that was doing back flips and such. For all I know the quads do that too but I haven't seen a video with it.

Thanks for the input.

Hex has stability, carry more weight so you can carry an extra battery and better gimbal...

Quad is good for fast flying, agility, more fun for FPV runs..

Why dont you get both like me :P

honestly the truth is both the quad and the hex are VERY stable and they fly themselves you just tell them where to go all the stablization and all that are handled by the auto pilot and make them both easy and fun to fly

Id start with a quad just cuz of the lower price opint and it will carry the gopro you want then if you like it go for a hex or even an octocopter

I got the dji phantom and I love it
