Indeed, it's a bitch having to wait for backups to load when you're in the zone for working. :(

Can't wait for the price of SSDs to drop so that I can include them in my backup workflow.

If they fail because you poo on them... and then play with poo as they fail... and keep the poo later 4 snacks...

Then cummon man? Its NOT THAT BAD...

http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/1...le-hard-drives

That is a good article from a hosting company talking about which brands fail first. It links to another deeper study they as well.

Having read it i completely changed my perception of various hard drive manufacturers.

As a bare minimum consider making up your users folder and in it to an off-site service like Backup plan

I also backup my business related files to Amazon cloud drive and drop box. No more starting from scratch for me. Plus i have on-site backups.

Look into RAID1. It's two or more drives providing redundancy. If one drive fails you can keep working using the other(s). When you can you pull out the failed drive and replace it and rebuild the array. Particulary if on a *nix look into ZFS or BTRFS as well which can provide near RAID equivalents with other advantages.

What he said. RAID1 is your solution and you can put it in a software RAID if the CPU is powerful enough. You will definately gain a speed advantage with 2 drives in a RAID1, disk i/o is the primary concern on modern day servers most hosting companies are pushing. We offer 2 drives in RAID1 by default on all of our dedicated server plans.
