That is a good article from a hosting company talking about which brands fail first. It links to another deeper study they as well. Having read it i completely changed my perception of various hard drive manufacturers. As a bare minimum consider making up your users folder and in it to an off-site service like Backup plan |
I also backup my business related files to Amazon cloud drive and drop box. No more starting from scratch for me. Plus i have on-site backups.

Look into RAID1. It's two or more drives providing redundancy. If one drive fails you can keep working using the other(s). When you can you pull out the failed drive and replace it and rebuild the array. Particulary if on a *nix look into ZFS or BTRFS as well which can provide near RAID equivalents with other advantages.
