Advice on hiring a celebrity?

I was wondering if someone can point me in the right direction if I wanted to hire a D-list celebrity or a model for an appearance or a license deal.

I own a hair salon in the Bay Area and I would like to become an "official hair salon of..." something or someone. Hopefully that makes sense.

I think MaDalton is available.

Even a D-List will charge you huge cash.

Its one thing for an appearance (I bet that will be at least $10k) but to have "official hair salon of..." will cost you big time.

Most (if not all) will have an agent.

The best thing to do is find agents online and see who they have on there books.

Personaly I would not bother.

A hair salon is word of mouth. If your good, people will tell others.

I guess I'm just asking you guys if anybody knows how to go about hiring a celebrity. Don't mind my budget, don't mind my decision to do it.

Talk to someone in PR who has this kind of experience. Make a list of 5-7 people who you might be interested in. Pay the PR person to contact the representation for these celebrities (agent).

Use the money for hot stylists instead, preferably ones that give free handjobs. :2 cents:

You could try calling AFTRA in Los Angeles... it's the union for television and radio personalities... they could provide some guidance and contact info for representation. They probably won't be able to offer a lot of rate info. More than likely, that will need to be acquired from agents... if they have them. Years ago when I had my advertising agency, I hired William Shatner to make a personal appearance. He was in between agents and I worked out a deal directly with him. This was, of course, after Star Trek, but before the show found cult status and long before any movies were made.

Point is... these people struggle sometimes just like everybody else. You never know what's possible until you try. The people at AFTRA are likely to know who's hungry for work. :winkwink:

Many C list personalities dont have agents getting them work, and with the right negotiating skills in place, wont cost half that.

You not only need celebrities, but you need local celebrities. If it were me, I'd contact anchors and reporters at local TV stations. They get lots of exposure and most don't make millions a year.

NALEM 02-10-2014 11:00 PM

First, ask yourself what can you afford?

Second, know who you want as a client: male, female, kids, family.
Are you a budget salon doing cuts under $20, between $35-50, or $70+

Third, make that list of people (regardless of where they are on the A-B-C-D list) you would want to "represent" you.

Is this persons followers/fan base match the target client you are looking to walk into your salon? Do enough of this person fans live in your area.

Next ... ask yourself how exactly do you see this person helping you?
Ie. Twitter, FB, Radio, Print or Digital Magazine photos, Events, etc.

Many C and D List personalities are not represented and can be approached directly. However keep in mind that some personalities that have ongoing gig like News Reporters, Anchorman/woman, and Team Cheerleaders alone cannot endorse your brand in any way that directly implies an endorsement by their employers (ie. CBS, NBS, SF Giants, Raider Girls). There you would need to see their contracts, and likely work directly with their handlers/management.

Final bit of free advice ... get creative in negotiating the terms. X amount of this and that. X paid monthly, and X paid for every ________ opportunity or ___________ number of people seen as new clients.

Good luck!

Actually I take that back. Any celebrity, not just local.

Sid70 02-12-2014 12:54 PM

I met a celebrity today, all he was talking about was him and his celebrity status and appearance.

For $1000 a month and I will change my name to anything he likes - In fact my name is already Damian Hill - That's nearly Damon Hill, great for a guys salon...

Captain Kawaii 02-12-2014 05:54 PM

Google/Bing/Yahoo beauty infomercials see who you like and contact their agents. Usually can find through imdb. SAG/AFTRA would be second stop.

Exactly. All William Shatner can do is be William Shatner... not many other sources of income there.
