Why is NFL played on a Sunday ??

Been reading today about the % of the workforce they expect to have phoned in "sick" because of the game (though i guess Denver fans really were sick). And i know that most regular season games are also played on a Sunday.

Is this purely for TV, or is there another reason ?? Wouldn't Saturday games be better, and let people have a drink etc, and give most people who work Mon-Fri a Sunday to relax before the working week starts again ?

I know most of the sports we have here are played on Saturdays, other than 1 or 2 Sunday games for TV...

Most people that go to Superbowl Parties can have a couple of drinks, socialize, go home, go to bed and be fine the next day. The % of people that are forced to call in sick because they drank too much and are super hungover have an alcohol problem.

Personally I love closing my weekend out with some football. Its a great excuse to not do anything on Sunday's.

College football is HUGE in the US, college football is played on Saturdays. The NFL/AFL were not anywhere near as popular as college football until the 70's so I assume the NFL chose Sunday as their day so as not to compete with college football. High school football is also huge in parts of the US and Friday night is their night.

Thursday night NFL games should be done away with, the games are usually terrible, 3 days between games just isn't enough to recuperate.

Ahh, that would explain it then thanks.

I think we are just used to having games on Saturdays here. But yeah we do have some Sunday and midweek games as well...

I'm all for "Superbowl Saturday"!

L-Pink 02-03-2014 05:20 PM

The problem isn't that it's played on Sunday, it's played to late on Sunday.

CDSmith 02-03-2014 07:42 PM

Because for much of the US football is a religion.

Football games are played on Sunday because the wives usually took kids to church and husband was left home to wrestle with his pigs. As time went on wifey would wagon pool with townfolk and leave all the husbands at home with the pigs. Soon they were wrestling themselves and they turned the pig into a oval ball that they would often kick with their foot...the rest is history!

I'm not saying that any of this is incorrect, as you are probably right, but people also tend to use Saturdays as days to get things done that they could not get completed during the week and use Sunday's to relax. Even in the football off-season, people still tend to follow that pattern.

Football is played on Sunday because football is really good and God can only watch it on Sunday.

Spunky 02-03-2014 10:01 PM

I always thought it was because the working blue collar man could actually attend the game or watch it

dillonaire 02-03-2014 10:11 PM

it goes back to roman times when the major battles would start and end on Sunday. Historically, the NFL view the players way back when as warriors on the battle field.
