The York County Coast Star reports a Maine eighth grade student received a nasty shock when her cell phone caught fire in her pocket Friday morning.

The student's iPhone smartphone very suddenly made a "pop" noise before the first class of the day at the Middle School of the Kennebunks, after which other students reportedly noticed smoke coming from the girl's pants.

The County Coast Star quotes an e-mail from school Principal Jeff Rodman stating that the girl was immediately assisted by her classmates and teacher, who attempted to remove the girls' pants and the burning phone.

One of my buddies had his mp3 player burn out of nowhere. I was - damn, what if you leave your house and something lits up and it make fire..

It's starting to become quite common lately as more and more devices contain lithium in their batteries. Lithium and the very air we breathe, do NOT mix well together.

You can actually start a camp fire with a lithium and/or NmH battery in the wild. Even with a dead one. Puncture it with knife, once air gets in, fire starts shooting out.

So, when seals on batteries weaken and air gets in, this is what causes devices to burst into flames
