Runner Up:

Honorable Mentions:
The Good The Bad and The Ugly
Unforgiven
The Wild Bunch

This one should definitely stir up some debate... which is good.

I stand by my choice of best ever. Once Upon... is not only the greatest Western of all time, it's one of the greatest movies ever made.

Honorable mentions were obviously hard. I wanted to put Good, Bad and the Ugly as Runner up but didn't think there should be 2 Leone movies there. I would have included The Assassination of Jesse James as a mention (it's one of my favorite movies ever made) but I feel like it falls into a different category altogether.

good bad ugly is my type of westerns :)

Once upon a time in the west is fucking spectacular. I enjoy most all Sergio Leone films, although he has a tendency to make some scenes too long. the scene with charles bronson's character at the train station with the extremely annoying squeaky windmill is an example of what I mean.

Another super fantastic movie of his IMO is "My name is nobody."

Then check out Once Upon A Time in the West. Same director, same style, but IMO better.

No doubt, but I would argue that Frank was a more memorable villain.

I do not remember many of them. All I could say that all the best westerns were made many years ago. Lets take 2000-2014, what are the best westerns during this period. Not so many and not so good. Maybe because westerns are more classic thing, hard to make one now.

stoka 01-28-2014 01:43 PM

Shane is very fine western movie too

Though plenty of classics have been mentioned, here's an overlooked classic:

The tandem of Willie Nelson and Gary Busey is tough to match!

The best Western of recent times has to be The Assassination of Jesse James.

RebelR 01-28-2014 05:44 PM

2 other mentionables would have to be Two Mules For Sister Sarah and The Outlaw Josie Wales. Both are great ones starring Eastwood

The Searchers was not even John Wayne's best movie, let alone a best western, his best movie was True Grit.
My favorite was his last movie The Shootist

Greatest Western Ever Made?
The good, the bad and the ugly
Unforgiven
Stagecoach
Tombstone
The Magnifcent Seven
The outlaw Josey Wales
And
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid!

I like older westerns but I always thought The Last Outlaw by HBO films was a damn good movie.

If by recent times you mean the last 10 years then 3:10 to Yuma was right up there (think it came out same year as The Assassination of Jesse James). It's a shame Tarantino's new script was leaked and he won't be making The Hateful Eight. I know most people either loved or hated Django but I really enjoyed it...

IMO, he's been a big baby about that. The leak didn't mean he had to bail on the project.

Just to mention one, Unforgiven, but it's pretty hard to name my all time favorite.
