in the uk its:
Grievous bodily harm (gbh): this is if you break the skin. first offence you will probably not get anything more than a caution. A chap I know of attact somone in the street and just got a fine. This was not his first affence as he had hit his girlfrend and a few others in the past.

Look at this chap, even he was let off.
A lot of it is that the UK prisons are full so they cannot lock people up. And its also that they have so many silly laws. Its now an offence to offend somone. So if I wore a t-shirt that offended you, I could do 3 years in prison (i belive somone is serving 3 years becase of that).
One MP joked on tv that its now harder to get in prison than it is university.
that said prison in the uk is very expensive. its about 40k per year. it would be cheaper to send them to oxford univeristy so they could get a top degree and a top job.
if you see in the new they say in the uk crime has gone down. its not realy true as they have stated this month police lie about the crime figures, plus most people no longer bother to report a crime.
also one thing from watching tv i have noticed is that uk police seem to over the last few years adopted a new brutal way they arest people. they dive onto people and pull there arms back in an extreamly aggressive way. yet i have noticed from tv shows usa police are much calmer and will treat you much better.
the other problem in the uk is that if you compain about the police its dealt with by the police complaints, and they tend to be another policman who simply does nothing. i had a complaint agaist one, and the other policman who investigated (to was a nice chap) simply told be he had a word and said that was that. while i think in the usa they have a proper team who realy do investigate the police.
in the uk trust in the police is gone. people just do not trust them. even the middle classes who traditionly used to suport the police no longer do.

you may not have heard about plebgate (yes its a pun on watergate) but they tried to set up a mp, and got him the sack. they lied and told the media a pack of lies, but this mp was smart and recorded the interview. it proved the mp was telling the truth and the police lied.

with the mark duggan the story the police told still sounds fishy. the main thing being how the gun was found in a different place as if it had been placed there.
