You know the Tesla Model S, the $70,000 (and-up) electric car that "nobody can afford"? Well, evidently, more than a few people can afford it.

MaDalton 01-20-2014 06:12 PM

dear lord - all these batteries...

esham 01-20-2014 06:24 PM

:) I need to go check my stock price for them. Maybe its time to sell.

esham 01-20-2014 06:26 PM

170.01 finally It took a while to get back

mineistaken 01-20-2014 06:37 PM

Just random things:
In US only.
Its almost a year old article.
Only versus specific models. And strange comparisons, they compared by price range to all the limousine class models, but shouldn't it compare to A6 instead of A8? Not too good for the numbers that would be, right? LOL.
Tesla has tax incentives to encourage buying.

dyna mo 01-20-2014 06:45 PM

Tesla's on fire!

SmutHammer 01-20-2014 06:47 PM

I looked at one the other day at the Tesla store in the Cincinnati mall. They can look nice but very plane at the same time. I can't see a reason to buy a Tesla over a Maserati. The screen in the middle just looks weird and out of place.

sandman! 01-20-2014 09:47 PM

in 10 years im sure i will own one of those electric cars :)

The thing is no one is impressed when you say BMW or Mercedes any more. These used to be cars that only doctors drove. Audi... Nice cars, and impressive (as much as the BMW or Mercedes), but no one seems to say "Oh, you have an AUUUUUDI".

Tell someone you have a Tesla and they will be like "oh, very cool".

fris 01-21-2014 07:55 AM

my brother got his tesla in december, he loves it, says you can hardly hear it at all.

something like 80 cents or something for a full tank?

Vendzilla 01-21-2014 08:04 AM

Have been seeing more and more of them on the roads, $7,500 of government help doesn't hurt for each one. Let's see at 4,750 model's that's 35,625,000 spent by the government to promote them!

Mickey_ 01-21-2014 08:16 AM

An extreme case of apples and oranges. :2 cents:

Kenny B! 01-21-2014 08:48 AM

It's a great piece of engineering, that fire is very odd since the motor is in the rear.

Either way I'm waiting to see the model-x later this year. The gas in my touareg is insane.

Dugan 01-21-2014 08:52 AM

22,000 more for the base mercedes s class, plus the government incentives...kind of a ridiculous comparison as mentioned above.

the fires were battery fires.

At issue is whether the size, shape and chemical makeup of the car?s battery makes it prone to fires when its lithium-ion cells are punctured in a collision.

Oh...so it turns out that cars full of highly combustible gasoline can catch fire in a crash and always have.

Of COURSE the Tesla can catch fire IF it's in a crash and an electric fire breaks out. Just like a "normal" car can catch fire from all the gasoline.

I'm betting that oil companies and Detroit car makers just love to put those pictures of a Tesla on fire up for everybody to go: "See, they suck"

Check out this article:

17 COMBUSTION ENGINE cars catch on fire EVERY HOUR.
I think Tesla is going to be okay.

It was a play on words, Robbie. You know, humor. Tesla's on fire. If you think I'm not aware that gasoline powered vehicles catch fire, well, not sure what to say to that.

I simply replied to Kenny's comment that the fires were not engine related with some details.

dyna mo 01-21-2014 09:21 AM

It's funny to me how few people here catch my humor at all.

Nah, wasn't directed at you personally, more at the story that you linked to.

Just putting it out there in general.
The media and the oil companies want the public perception to be that electric cars suck and are unsafe.

People don't think about the flip side of the coin with gas cars. Hell, I had no idea the 17 gasoline powered cars per hour catch on fire. That's pretty shocking.

dyna mo 01-21-2014 09:32 AM

I guess the joke's on me eh.

That said, there's plenty of positive publicity re: Tesla, such as this thread topic.

You are exactly right. BMW, Mercedes, Audi etc, do not impress me at all and do not even hold my interest.

I don't mean to sound like a broken record here, but to me Gas engines are ancient technology. Sure they have some sexy window dressing (and Corinthian leather! Mmmm!) but to me it is just wrapping around an old dud. Show me some real technology..!

It's not a promotion, its an incentive. Each citizen that buys one is one less citizen that has to depend on (some) foreign oil. It is also the government's way of helping a new company and new technology grow.

But never mind old man, you don't get it, you never will.

For Vendzilla, before you jerk off to a picture of a Tesla on fire, here's a little equation for you:

Energy Storage = Volatility

Good night.

I'm not going to get that you just changed the name from promotion to incentive and somehow rainbows are shooting out your ass? I get it!

That is 1/10th of the price of a f-22 fighter and now you have an American company with American tech beating the German manufacturers where others never could :pimp

Every time I read your posts I think of John Stuart Mills :

"I did not mean that Conservatives are generally stupid; I meant, that stupid persons are generally Conservative. I believe that to be so obvious and undeniable a fact that I hardly think any Gentleman will question it." John Stuart Mills

JSM was the man whose essay helped define Libertarianism, despite your claim of being one every post you make unfortunately seems to indicate you belong in the quoted category.

Tesla. Is. Awesome.

bigpappa17934 02-10-2014 07:19 PM

Not sure how many of you live in an area where you can test drive one or if any of you have ever test driven one, they are AMAZING NEW pieces of technology that are ONLY going to get better IMO. I want one and will probably end up with one in the next year. Not only because I live in Denver and am high on some good shit, but also because the car just fucking FLY'S!!!

Clay 02-10-2014 08:02 PM

Im surprised. I know people who have been in them and said they're not that great. They dont have the luxury you would expect in a car that price

I agree 100% with you. Amazing cars. Everyone should try one, even if you're not a car enthusiast, or especially if you're a a gas & oil guy, or EXTRA-especially if you're a sci-fi nerd like me.

I went a test-drove a Chevy VOLT today just for the heck of it. It's not as fast or cool as the Tesla, it it too is surprisingly fast. Unlike gas cars, it has all of its torque starting at 1 RPM and it is really noticeable.

Really? Maybe it depends on the model they purchased? I am eyeballing the P65 with all of the gadgets, the leather, cushy seats etc... I found it really nice.
