So Internext/AVN Attendees: How's Our Industry Doing?

I couldn't attend the festivities this year (too much work finishing up some major projects) but by the looks of things this year's Internext and AVN Shows were awesome affairs! So what's the verdict? How's our Industry doing?

I know Industry shows aren't the only barometer of an industry's health but I think it's a good one. You can usually tell, just by being around others in your business, what the "vibe" is, or how hopeful or negative everyone seems to be. So what was the mood at this year's shows? Hopeful? Uneasy?

When I attended a couple years ago the mood was trepidation. People were still reeling from the changes the Tubes had brought about. Some were holding on to "old school" ideas while others were embracing the new climate but it was definitely a transitional feel to it. How about this year?

Barefootsies 01-19-2014 12:48 PM

It depends on who you talk too and what they are doing.

For some, they are expanding, diversifying, or partnering up on new ventures. Others are crying in their beers as they learn to accept the new adult online economy and that they 'good ole days' are gone. You have some new faces who think they will light the adult world on fire, and plenty of ghost ships floating around looking for a port.

From what I saw, this year had a decent turn out and all parties were apparently packed. I do not know the final count of attendees, but perhaps someone with those numbers can chime in for this year versus past years. I would say it was a decent showing from what I could tell. However, as you said, this doesn't translate to the health of the industry on the whole.

Seemed to be a decent showing. Just don't compare it to affiliate summit west

Tons of new Companies and sponsors, and attendees..tons of booths, and old and new models also..nuf said..:2 cents:

MaDalton 01-19-2014 04:26 PM

amacontent 01-19-2014 04:35 PM

Axel_Crak 01-19-2014 09:53 PM

Peoples were more business oriented which is a great news... we had no less than 30 meetings !!

Our best VEgas show so far for biz... great quality, and Vegas is Cheap !

The Porn Nerd 01-20-2014 10:15 AM

Sounds like a lot of business got done in Vegas this year! :)

Ross 01-20-2014 10:18 AM

Meet market was great, packed non stop and with people I wouldn't normally get to meet. Time will tell if it was a great show for business, it doesn't happen overnight but the reality is that we have never had a bad Vegas show, everyone always brings up some form of business that we otherwise may not have found, or at least not so soon.

Wizzo 01-20-2014 10:35 AM

Based on the show I would say the industry is on the upswing again.

TNVeric 01-20-2014 11:06 AM

What I took from the show

It's all about MOBILE

There is still plenty of money to be made in adult, we just need to be smarter and more selective with our resources.

Great Show.

JayAllan 01-21-2014 12:31 PM

It was a great show for me. Lots of studios wanting higher quality productions and more money being spent on higher grade porn which is I think a sign of things to come and a good indicator of where the industry is headed ;)

Far-L 01-21-2014 12:42 PM

We did well at Internext mostly for the reason that the people attending all seemed about doing biz rather than just partying.

What really impressed me was how booming the AVN show was with consumers, but way fewer companies so it was easier to get attention.

I actually think we might even do a booth again there next year.

VS_Jeff 01-21-2014 04:15 PM

One of the best shows I've been too.

Rochard 01-21-2014 04:31 PM

What is the state of our industry? "Better".

Seems to me there was a lot of business going on, lots of meetings. I didn't hear people complaining about "how bad things are" and in fact, a lot of people told me things are getting better and better every month.

I see this in my own stats.

To echo what others have already said, plenty of great opportunities to be had. Now it's all about catching up and following up.

Following up is very important. If you let even a few weeks go by you end up looking at that stack of business cards you collected and go 'Gee I hope everyone remembers me!" LOL

Great to hear it was such a good show!! :thumbsup

Your opinion means a lot to me and to see what you said gives me hope.

We had a great show and met a ton of new clients.

Besides getting the flu 1/2 way through it was awesome.

SomeCreep 01-22-2014 05:33 PM

Tubes are doing fine. Paysites with high quality exclusive content who do media buys through tubes are doing fine. Everyone else is dead.

NETbilling 01-23-2014 12:45 AM

Great attendance and a lot of business being done.

Yeah following up is important, following through is what really matters.

Being remembered isn't hard, wearing a pig nose or toilet seat will do the trick:winkwink:

My impression from internext:

Unlike GFY, the industry is made up of mostly functional professionals and even the batshit crazies seem to be able to keep it together in person.

There is as much or ore money than ever but its in the hands of a few organized people who know their shit and do it well, the crazy cowboys and mom and pop's are either retired or broke. Like any American town that hasn't been gentrified yet, main street is a ghost town filled with bums, crack houses and vacant buildings and all the traffic is at Wal-Mart, Target or the mall.

Everything is about mobile now. Your mobile site is your main site, your desktop version is mostly for your own enjoyment and a few old people that bother to own computers anymore.

Dating is the current gold rush and it seems those who want to make their money better do it fast as the FTC is aware that 99.99% of the female profiles are fake and is about to come down hard on anyone not clearly disclosing that.

other observations/revelations:

Claudia Marie is real, not Robbie's real doll that he takes pictures with to pretend he's not alone.

Nubiles affiliate reps are just as hot as the performers (and they are not performers, at least they deny it when asked)

People are really nice in person, even when they are dicks on the board.

Every time Brad buys a shirt, he takes a hit out on the tailor so that nobody else gets one.

jgabra62 01-23-2014 09:15 AM

In terms of MOBILE, it seems the industry is taking a huge turn in a positive direction.

I would also echo what a few other have said and say that InterNext was one of the better shows I've been to in a long time.

what did you hear at the show that gave you that impression?

i was at iDate in Vegas in Jan 2013, and the keynote was from a higher-up at the FTC...who said pretty much the same thing. Its a year later, and I havent heard anything else about it, save for the investigative piece published in the UK mid-2013 that went after Cupid PLC for doing it. nothing has come of that at this point, either.

SB_Content 01-23-2014 10:02 AM

I didn't go to the internext show but I did attend the AVN expo and award show (the award show was well done this year). The expo was small, smaller than last year, not many companies had booths this year. I talked with quite a few (good) content producers, directors, camera men, photographers, production managers, agents, talent both male and female, and it was pretty much the same conversation with all of them. Amongst the people who are above and below the line in production there is a great feeling of uncertainty about the future of this industry. :Oh crap

Both of the legal panels discussed it in detail. They said a year ago the FTC announced that they would be cracking down if the industry did not clean itself up. Obviously nobody did anything different and now there are supposedly at least 3 large companies being investigated and undergoing proceedings right now.

Apparently false advertising is illegal. Who knew? I guess we live in a police state now where you cant just lie to people and tell them that 7 or 8 pornstars in their area want to fuck them tonight GUARANTEED for 1.99 that recurrs at 39.95/mo till cancelled.
