I'm fairly certain the number used by everyone is 6 million holders. I think that was stated in the btc panel at internext by Tony w/ Bitpay.

You can't really determine the holdings of a single entity. If you look at 100 unique addresses, there's no real way to know whether it's going to 100 different people, or 50, or 1.
