win 7 has a keyboard icon in the taskbar. Click it and you can change your keyboard layout. Happens from time to time to me too that it changes the default automatically.

Windows 8 has a different way but looks like this is how to solve it:

To make a keyboard your default keyboard

To set a keyboard as your default keyboard, follow these steps:

Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click Search.)

Enter language, choose Settings, and then tap or click Add a language.

Tap or click Advanced settings.

Under Override for default input method, choose the keyboard layout you'd like to be your default keyboard, and then tap or click Save.

Thanks but this didn't work. The default keyboard in UK, this is what I want.
Tried language > advance settings howver this didn't make any difference.

thats weird. I am in the Netherlands, but the keyboards in this country are all "United States (International)" layout. Whenever my keyboard fucks up, the "Netherlands" layout is selected. Maybe the same for you? Select US (international) and see if it fixes your prob.

Hold both Shift keys and then the ALT key. Or try holding shift, ctrl and alt for a while.

I found that turning it off and then turning it back on again resolved said problem.
