be nice

I saw a sign on a big transport truck the other day. It read, "Horn broken, watch for finger." And, of course, there was the old classic: "How's my driving? Call 1-800-EAT..." Well, it was a four-letter word that ended in T. It might've been dirt. Oh, well, never mind.

It's bad enough these guys are driving eighty-thousand pound rigs, but they gotta advertise the fact that they're bullies before they even start tailgating you? What kind of attitude is this? Of course, I'm not just talking about truck drivers; I'm talking about everybody. And it's not many of them either. I mean, it's passenger car drivers as well. Why can't we just be nicer to each other? Why do we have to act like jerks all the time? I mean, if you're driving along on the freeway and some guy looks like he wants to pull into the lane in front of you, pull over and let him in. What's the big deal? It's going to take a tenth of a second longer to get home?

And if you're in the city traffic and it looks like a guy's nosing out of a driveway or a parking lot? Let him in. Give him the jaunty little wave. Why not? What's the big deal? And if someone lets you in, that's something nice to you, give him that little wave back. Give him the thumb's-up - be careful with the okay sign. It doesn't mean okay in every culture, all right? All I'm trying to say is: be nice. And if you do make a mistake - we all make a mistake - if you cut somebody off inadvertently, don't just drive along and keep your eyes frozen on the road pretending nothing happened, acknowledge to the guy, give a little shrug of the shoulders, or maybe the prayer symbol - providing you're not driving, of course.

Just let's spread a little good news for a change. So next time you get in your car, don't forget to put on your seatbelt and put your ego in the glove box.
