dogecoins fail
So I started mining some dogecoins just as an experiment, as I missed the boat on bitcoins and never really learned how the system works, so I figured this would be a way to learn the basics.
Things were going OK, I had 4 pcs mining that were left on all the time anyway. Found a wallet site to store them in and transferred a bunch. Now this morning I see this on their website: http://dogewallet.com/ Also, the pool I was mining from suddenly went down as well. Are things this volatile in the bitcoin market too, or is this because dogecoin is more of a joke coin? At least they aren't worth anything. If I lost thousands of bitcoins due to hacking Id probably be hanging from a rope right now. |
Crypto coins are like cash. Would you entrust your ?real? money some random guys and without checking the trustworthiness?
There are some tutorials about basic securing of your wallets, at least you should encrypt them. Since my collection of coins gained some real value I am already thinking about a dedicated PC, linux, exclusively for storing coins. One service I use is cryptsy. They got a lot of bad press lately, but I got a few $k there (actually rather for trading than for storage)and never had a problem. . |
crypto curency security is really bad...

Ya I wasn't really sure what to do with the coins after you mined them. I did a search and the first thing that came up was dogewallet.com. Now I see how the offline wallet system works and I am just setting that up now. If anything, dogecoin makes a good learning tool for newbies since there is little risk of losing much money.
Apparently there is some possibility the owners of dogewallet pulled a scam and weren't just incompetent like they are trying to make everyone believe. News stories are estimating the total value of the coins lost there to be up to $20000. |
With doge i can noot emcrypt wallet crashes every time

Wasn't happy with a thousand Bitcoin threads now it will be filled with Bitcoin and all the alternatives as well. :1orglaugh

You should have used http://www.dogepool.net and sent them to your Cryptsy address.
Merry Christmas :) |

Stupidity :2 cents:

Dogecoins are a joke and were always. Stick to bitcoin, an already stable coin with investors of up to 15 million .(The facebook guys)

Remember that you now need to think about local security. Make sure A/V is up to date and you encrypt your wallet, because someone only needs a COPY of wallet.dat (unencrypted) in order to steal your funds.
(I'm sure someone out there has already written malware that hunts for wallet.dat and phones it home to some command server in eastern europe...) |
