Comedian Jerry Lewis
Went to South Point Casino here in Vegas last night and saw Jerry Lewis live at The Showroom.
Fucking incredible. I was kind of wondering what shape he would be in. Well, he's 87 years old. He walked out dressed to the "9's" and looked great. He's still sharp and funny as hell. Once he had said hello to the crowd, he sat in a directors chair for the rest of the show. Understandable. He told some jokes and then showed a lot of super cool old footage from his career. Including some hilarious live bits with him and Dean Martin from Vegas back when it was REALLY Vegas. At the end he took Q&A from the audience and even sang a song. It was a very neat experience just to be in the same room with the guy. He told us that he was working burlesque theaters doing comedy in between the strippers when he was 14 years old. (his dad was also a performer in burlesque). He teamed up with Dean Martin when he was 18 years old and they had that incredible run together for 10 years where they were the biggest stars in the world. Here's an idea of just how popular they were back in the day...Justin Bieber WISHES he was this big: |
I love Jerry Lewis, for how long is he playing there?
|
I loved all his movies, he's not doing the telethons anymore is he?
Haven't heard anything from him in a while, Thanx Robbie!!!!! |
rofl bieber is a million times more popular than aarp lewis could ever dream
|
wow i'm surprised he's performing, he gave up doing his MD Telethon because of some serious disease he has.
i grew up watching the Johnny Carson show with my dad with all these legends of showbiz and it depresses me that most of them are dead. Don Rickles is still going strong and performing - the boom in casinos across North America has been great for these old timers. When I was 12 Jerry Lewis was on a plane I was on, I was excited to see a famous celeb and ran up to him when we landed to say 'Mr. Lewis I'm a big fan' - he totally brushed me off. :Oh crap |

Bieber most likely will be gone and forgotten in 5 years like most teen idols are - Michael Jackson was a rare exception. Maybe Bieber will too but I doubt it. |

Did you not watch that film clip of the streets of New York full of screaming girls I put in my post? My point was that most folks don't realize how huge of a star he was in his heyday. He was a "rockstar" before rock stars even existed. I wasn't trying to attack your musical hero or anything, just pointing out that a clown like Bieber has never and will never attain the success that Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin had when they were in their mid-20's. They were the biggest box office stars in the world at a time when that really meant something. |

I gotta say it was an amazing experience. And the footage he showed from his prime was incredible. |
The French seem to like him.

The paper here in Vegas interviewed him a few days ago before the show:

Unfortunately it's very hard to buy the old Jerry Lewis / Dean Martin films online through iTunes. I used to love those films. Hopefully they get released one day.
Jerry Lewis was definitely a rock star before rock stars existed, so was Dean Martin for that matter. Dean Martin produced many albums that were hits long after release and subject to re-release after re-release. |
His generation wrote the book Bieber's generation cannot even read.
Good for Jerry. Glad his health issues have subsided. |

Man, Jerry Lewis has done more for charities, specifically on the Labor Day telethons for Muscular Dystrophy, than that Beiber twerp ever will...if he even man's up to attempt such a thing. Not to mention all of the things Robbie has pointed out about his amazing career. |

Loved him when I was a kid. Him and Lou Costello.

That had to be a great experience and who knows how much longer he has.

The highlight of his career was in 2009. Make sure you don't miss the 1:50 minute mark (he looks repulsed actually), then the dry humping of an audience member at 2:55 and then the climax at 4:07

The legend lives on. One of the greats, and a childhood icon.
