roll your eyes when whatever london rag you read tells you how many were from the UK.

It's just our peaceful muslim brothers making a statement about freedom.

Sarah_Jayne 03-04-2003 08:32 AM

12clicks..i roll my eyes at that too. As if the other 18 people wouldn't warrant a story. I was by no means suggesting the UK press is any better. Of course you should care one was an american...it is the inablity to care for the other 18 I was rolling my eyes at.

you have an odd outlook on the world.
the newspaper isn't trying to get us to care, just make it relevant locally.

And yes, I *don't* care if the muslim scum allowed to run wild in the phillipines kill a handfull of phillipinos. (especially when they continue to refuse the help of the US to rid themselves of them):thumbsup

naw, just been in newspaper editorial meetings when it is disscused exactly like that.

Anyhow, back to our corners.

It's an American owned newspaper directed at an American audience, duh? So why wouldn't they write 18 people including one American?

i was refering to the headline, of course in the story sure that is an important thing. It is that I am guessing it would have had even less coverage (if any) if an American hadn't been involved.

and I have no idea what LiveDose is talking about.

LiveDose 03-04-2003 09:35 AM

you're a poser girl, admit it. Anything for attention...

Sarah_Jayne 03-04-2003 09:42 AM

um, ok

Are you serious? So you're saying terrorist incidents, where more than a dozen people are killed, are happening all over the world right now; but if there was no American killed in the incident, then it wouldn't make it the big headlines? Prove me wrong and link me with a recent event that involves terrorism & death, excluding the Middle East area and I'll shuttup. Even local newspapers report car accidents and such, so surely you can end up finding something even though it's not in the big headlines.

Sarah_Jayne 03-04-2003 10:04 AM

I wasn't being specific about terrorist events. Hell, I wasn't even being overly sensitive to this particular story or overly singling out the US media. Would feel the same about the UK, Canadian, whatever, press.

Also, anything with a possible terroist slant is going to be used in the US and UK media these days because everyone is on the edge. Hell you can't have someone have someone stub their toe and not have someone ask if there were terrorists involved - that is on both sides of the Atlantic.

I would rolls my eyes similarly at a story about a huge earthquake where it had to be pointed out in the headline that an American or a Brit or a Mexican ..whatever..was killed in order for people to care? I would also roll my eyes at the stories that don't include terrorism that get 10 seconds on US national news if anything at all.

So, you said excluding the middle east but out of my own curiosity anyway I will ask how much coverage 200 some people dying in the plane crash in Iran got in the US? Honest question.

I wasn't being specificly critical of the US..just the journalist decission. Living in a journalist household and having been one myself for a bit I tend to do that.

so..again this was not a war specific show of frustation, it wasn't a US specific show of frustration. It was just a show of frustration with the editorial choice and human nature in general. oh btw..19 are dead.
