So I spent 18 hours rescuing people and pets from flooding

First time in something like a hundred years we had flooding like this in our country and I have to say, people are fucking idiots.

First we spend time going house to house notifying people to vacate the premises only to have to come back 8 hours later to fucking evacuate those morons by boat because they choose to stick around.

Some even complained about the risk of theft, after their property is flooded with 2 meters of water :1orglaugh

We did save a lot of lives though, but I also think some bodies will turn up today as the water retreats. People apparently think it's a great idea to stick around inside the house when the water starts pouring in. There is no way to stop it, even if you can't go anywhere, the roof is better. We had heli's circling us as we were sailing around looking for people in a summerhouse area and around 3 am we just had to stop - we couldn't see anyone and we used thermal cameras.

I am guessing that our station alone evacuated around 60 people, at least 10 dogs and few cats.

My body is spent now lol

The place that got hit the worst in the country was north of Copenhagen (where I live), so Rødby should be fine - especially next week, since the water will all have retreated by then.

And yea busy night indeed, my Jawbone UP said I walked 15 Km by measuring how many steps I took. Considering most of the walking was done in 1-1,5m water in waders, that's pretty long stretch. No wonder my body is sore.

well, your op is a mish mash of messages then, you feel the need to point out how people in crisis mode are idiots but also feel the need to post *look at me* thread.

No lol. I know the team manager video taped us as we were "walking" a really old lady out on a trailer powered by an ATV - but I haven't seen it. I'll share it if he uploads it.

Yea I guess I wanted to rant about how people behaving stupidly when being advised in good time on what to do and then when they don't do it, they expect to be freaking rescued. Ultimately the time we had to spend there, meant time couldn't be spend other places where people were also in need - so they could be indirectly the cause of people dying.

dyna mo 12-07-2013 07:55 AM

yes, you're the guy who decides who deserves being rescued more. i get that.

dyna mo 12-07-2013 07:56 AM

sarcasm dude.

you having a bad day? :winkwink:

EddyTheDog 12-07-2013 08:03 AM

When we had the floods in Hull I remember my flatmate trying to sweep the water out with a fucking broom, he didn't give up until it was up past his ankles - I had a really shitty hangover and went back up stairs to bed...

2MuchMark 12-07-2013 08:03 AM

No one wants to give up their homes. And when people are scared, they may not always think rationally. Why call them idiots? You showed compassion reducing them and their animals, why not extend the compassion a little further by not calling them idiots?

so the question still stands...

why did YOU choose to waste your time saving idiots instead of people you think deserve it more?

and then come here to rant about the idiots while pointing out what a humanitarian you are.

I don't think they read GFY. But it seems I hurt someones feelings with that comment... unbelievable with the amount of shit that is being thrown around...

In any case. People that choose not to listen when we go door to door to warn them in a very clear language explaining that they have to evacuate because later they will not be able to. They then choose to stay because they "know better" or whatever they were thinking. Then they call for help and then we have to go back and fetch them, because they choose not to listen. Well... Excuse me, but I think they are idiots.

Idiots for risking their own life. Idiots for risking the life of the rescue workers. Idiots for causing deaths because rescue workers can't be two places at the same time. Idiots.

Still human beings that has to be rescued.

Definition of an idiot by the way: An idiot, dolt, or dullard is a intellectually disabled person, or someone who acts in a self-defeating or significantly counterproductive way.

When I disregard evacuation warnings, and I've ignored a few biggies, I have always joked that whoever finds my body will say "Hey I found another idiot" .

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/100-year_flood

Quote:

A one-hundred-year flood is a flood event that has a 1% probability of occurring in any given year. The 100-year flood is also referred to as the 1% flood, since its annual exceedance probability is 1%,[1] or as having a return period of 100-years. The 100-year flood is generally expressed as a flowrate. Based on the expected 100-year flood flow rate in a given creek, river or surface water system, the flood water level can be mapped as an area of inundation. The resulting floodplain map is referred to as the 100-year floodplain, which may figure very importantly in building permits, environmental regulations, and flood insurance.
He did say it was the first flood like that in his area in 100 years. Every floodplain has its own 100 year flood. It's not a global statistic.

HAARP conspiracies are pure bullshit.

Quote:

Stanford University professor Umran Inan told Popular Science that weather-control conspiracy theories were ?completely uninformed,? explaining that ?there?s absolutely nothing we can do to disturb the Earth?s [weather] systems. Even though the power HAARP radiates is very large, it?s minuscule compared with the power of a lightning flash?and there are 50 to 100 lightning flashes every second. HAARP?s intensity is very small.?[3]
