Are spelling and grammar lost arts?

Every day I get emails from customers that make me wonder how these people even feed themselves. Not just from the US where I expect a good amount of poor education but from the UK, Australia and NZ as well.

I cant find any indication of it being a race or class issue, it just seems young people are fucktards.

Here's some examples:

cansule my account, I cant use your site its not conpattable with my phone so it dose me no good thank you.

I want to cancle my account and not to be build again

Im tring 2 registar when I registar it ssems 2 kick me out & I put N the right info like I put N my Name ,Adress, state, city, zip, & crdt card so can U help mw Y its doin this 2 me THANK YOU.

please camcil

I wonder how people like that even think.

AllAboutCams 12-04-2013 10:35 AM

Im bad but i don't think im that bad

CDSmith 12-04-2013 10:38 AM

Yeah, you make allowances for people trying to peck away on their smart phones and such, and also for people who aren't in english speaking countries of course. But it does look pretty bad on some people, the horrible grammar and spelling and *cough* text-speak that goes on.

c u sune
yo sup
r u there?
u their?
im nut sur

How do they feed themselves indeed.

iSpyCams 12-04-2013 10:41 AM

I can forgive the text speak to a degree, especially when they seem to be using a phone, but total butchery of a word to the point where you are certain they have no clue as to its meaning or pronunciation is just sad.

slapass 12-04-2013 11:30 AM

You are surprised that the average person who joins a porn site might not have the highest education or IQ?

I would think a porn membership would be the sign that they can't feed themselves.

Cell phone penetration hit 50% faster then any other technology in history and literacy rates have been going up since that happened. They seem to be tied together but yes grammar suffered but most of these folks would have been illiterate before.

robwod 12-04-2013 11:35 AM

When I receive correspondence that is effectively "txt speak", I simply delete it. If one cannot take the time to type a few extra letters, phone or no phone, I'm hardly about to waste my time trying to interpret their message.

I'm not talking about typos here -- heck, I am the typo king. I am talking strictly about the laziness that is "txt style".

I've actually received email inquiries about employment opportunities with us using such a lazy and sloppy grammatical approach.

Certainly there are **some** allowances for those where English is not their first language, but I simply will not waste my time with someone communicating with me via such a lazy approach as "txt style" shorthand. It is indicative of their lack of professionalism.

It's a live cam site so there isn't really a piracy alternative to that.

That actually makes a lot of sense. If people who clearly have no idea how to read and write are making the effort to read and write as best they can then literacy must be improving and not declining.

I almost feel bad for mocking them. (nah, gotta mock somebody)

xNetworx 12-04-2013 11:46 AM

Youtube comments make me weep for the human race. I can't even read the comments on rap videos without becoming depressed.

fitzmulti 12-04-2013 11:51 AM

I see that so often, it almost seems hopeless, LOL.
{BTW - I sent you an email earlier...about Addie}

Oh dude thanks for reminding me. getting back to you now.

RebelR 12-04-2013 11:58 AM

Well, slang is celebrated, we make up words with impunity, and kids don't see a need to learn how to spell, because the computer does it for them. Is it any wonder that people can no longer look at a word and wonder if it's right or not, when there are so many variations tossed out there on the internet?

Not unlike when you're getting change from a cashier and they have to wait for the register to tell them how much you get back.

And for what it's worth, common sense is a dying art as well.

:2 cents:

my favorite is:

sup
yu der
(usually followed by a BUZZ on yahoo)

I find ESL guys actually go out of their way to communicate effectively, it seems like the middle class white boys who live with their moms are usually the worst text-speak offenders (i.e. they have no fucking excuse aside from idiocy and laziness).

I recently spent some time with my nephew who graduated from high school with a B average. I was shocked at his inability to spell common words. Not to mention he didn't know how to use punctuation for shit. He wants to be a structural engineer when he graduates college. He is going to need a lot of English courses.

I was also shocked to shit when my own kids started college and both needed reading comprehension and basic English because they did so poorly on their entrance exams. 1) They didn't even offer reading comprehension at college level back in my day. 2) I flunked out of high school and finished six years later in adult school, and yet I still scored high enough to do English 1a (English 101 equivalent) right off the bat.

Don't even get me started on their math skills. Especially my nephew that wants to use math to make a living.

To his benefit though, he can pick out the correct socket size for a hex bolt every time without fail. Even metric. I think he should learn Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance.

When you think about how little a person in say 1970 had to read or write if they were in a trade, it is amazing. The average 15 year old reads and writes more in a day then the average over the road trucker used to do in a year.

Gotcha on the cam thing. Then yes it is different.

Both are equally correct.

People pay good money for perfect spelling and grammar.

The more lost they get, the more business that comes our way. :thumbsup

The other day, I saw an employment ad on Craig's List looking for a "management tranny"

X_X_ROB_X_X 12-05-2013 12:47 AM

I would write an in-depth response to this thread but I'm afraid I might misspell something. Carry on.
