Do you lie to family that you are agnostic?

I still do to my 80yr old mom.

I hope this thread is read and replied to. I have so many Q's.

It sounds like your mother is a devout believer in Jesus and you don't want to disappoint or worry her - so if you're going to lie to her that you're not sure, an agnostic, why not just tell her you're a believer? They're both lies, go with the whopper, it's a lie that causes her no harm, and as for you there's no reason for you to feel guilty, you'd be telling her what she wants to hear.

Of course if it was my mom and she was into the fairy tale I'd tell her she's an idiot - but you probably have a different/better relationship than I did with mine.

Hey man thanks for the thought out reply, known you here for many years now.

I lie and tell her I believe as I do with the rest of VERY right born again family, 2 sisters.

You see they are super cool in so many other things like family love.

SilentKnight 12-01-2013 09:10 AM

My parents are open-minded - but even if they were devout religious - I wouldn't hide the fact that I'm an atheist.

I'm not an apologist nor do I feel the need to sugar-coat my opinions.

It's just the way I am.

My parents and I have mutual respect that we think for ourselves rather than blindly following one direction or another.

Lies always bring a family together. They sound like great people. Oh...wait... It does not add to your relationship to keep parts hidden. I think I would avoid the word idiot but respect is a big one for me other then that why not share a bit? What is the downside?

What is the downside?

I am the black sheep with all I truly have.

Dad has passed and mom isn't very religious. Neither are my sisters. My aunts, uncles and grandmother on my dads side are very religious and during gatherings which are mostly on Christmas I have to bite my tongue during prayer to keep me from blurting out "He wasn't born on this day you idiots! It's a Pegan Holiday!"

Best-In-BC 12-01-2013 10:39 AM

No, cause I dont support dilutions and fucking crazy people

J. Falcon 12-01-2013 11:03 AM

My parents ddidn't even baptize me, that should answer your question. I was allowed to choose my own religion.

Paully 12-01-2013 04:55 PM

My family knows I'm an atheist. Although they won't discuss religion with me anymore because well, it's pretty ridiculous. I will still sit with them at the table and hold my head down when they pray before eating.

I think at your mothers age there is especially no reason to let her know. Getting old is one of those things that causes people to gravitate towards the idea of eternal life. I think trying to tell her different at her age would serve no purpose and may just get you thrown out of the will.

it seems hypocritical and one sided that they expect you to accept their views (because in their deluded mind their views are the only right ones) but you are forced to hide yours. if they truly loved and respected you it wouldn't matter what you believed.

Keep biting your tongue. No one ever said Jesus was born on Christmas, it's the celebration of his birthday. The day it's celebrated, not the actual day.

You know, I just had a neighbor talk to me about her church and invited me to it if I wanted to go. I really like this neighbor. She's super awesome, but she is definitely into God and Jesus big time. I'm an agnostic too so that does create some uncertainty as to how to behave in these situations. I just kind of listened to her, and even showed interest. Hell, I might just go to her church one Sunday for the fun of it. They don't have to know I'm agnostic. Besides, I do find that Jesus was a fascinating character. And she mentioned they have discussions on him.

That is completely right!

Why should you have to placate a bunch a superstitious bullshit when your viewpoint is not taken into account. I say tell them exactly what you think and laugh at them when you shatter their world with reality!

In the end it doesn't matter if you Mother Theresa or Hitler...everyone ends the game the same way and is totally equal.

So being the guy who lies to everyone doesn't make you the black sheep? Your character counts less then your net worth with your devout family? I think you are getting this wrong. Dont get a bumper sticker or anything. It might be an age thing as I can't even imagine it as an issue but I am middle aged.

mikesinner 12-01-2013 11:09 PM

If your parents or friends are idiots, sociopaths or brainwashed then yes you will have to lie to them about your beliefs but you will probably have to lie to them about other things as well.

Spunky 12-01-2013 11:14 PM

Jesus is lord! I'm a believer ,Hallelujah

DAMNMAN 12-01-2013 11:18 PM

I am not an agnostic I am an atheist. Not sitting on a fence waiting for a winner in the war of ideas here. I am not afraid to it's all bunk!!!!
DUSTY SAYS LOGIC!!! >;-))
I don't lie to anyone about my atheism. I truly think religion and the belief in gods in general is fucking horrific to the future mankind. (The past was pretty fucking horrible too, due to over zealous believers)
Luckily my family are all very reasonable and don't buy into the horseshit whatsoever.

JESUS was a purely fictional character!!!!

Don't just believe me, this fucking video, or anybody else for that matter, do some historical document finding and weigh the evidence for yourself.
