anyone switch from xp to win7 and solved the editing files on removable media device problem?
 
I like xp and have hung onto it for as long as I could, but my machine is on life support now, so I gotta make the switch (which I'm looking forward to in the having more than 4gb RAM department), but I'm fucking dreading the issue where you can't edit/resave eg txt files on an external drive that were saved running xp, in win7.

post #10 of this thread about the issue looks like a solution, what I'm after knowing is if it's some kind of global setting that allows me to open everything as administrator, rather than 'run as' administrator: http://www.sevenforums.com/system-se...-txt-file.html

I fucking suck at anything even remotely tech-related, and fully expect to get caned for being such a thick cunt lol, but the issue was so bad when I upgraded my xp machine to win7 that I had to revert back after 2 or 3 days of googling.

It's crucial that I'm able to edit and save files on my external drive, and when I specifically asked the tech guys at the place where I'll likely get my new machine, I got this in response:

I was addicted to XP for many years. I didn't like the new Windows 7 menues so use a program called Classic Menu

What are you talking about?

Just assume ownership and you won't have any issues on external drive files or save-as, filename_new and delete old and rename to filename.

^^ will solve most of your issues I bet. But if not.. do what it takes to open the file through multiple menus you are describing and save a new file as described in my initial reply in this post.

Cheers Jimmy, so you know the problem I mean yeah? Just that those things (though obviously very helpful anyway) don't look like they solve the issue with trying to edit eg blahblah.txt transferred from an xp machine?

well, have a look at that thread in the OP, and that's what I'm talking about :) Known problem, and last time I just couldn't resolve it, even after following the huge procedure as laid out on microsoft's site (which I now can't find thanks to google getting shittier by the day).

Will have a butcher's in a sec at that link, sounds like it's on the right track though, because I *really* don't want to have to dick about copying file contents to a new file in the same format, saving as name_new, deleting the old file, and renaming again to name.extension. Obviously if I absolutely have to, then I have to.

post #5 in that thread highlights the steps needed to not only find, but guess at what to do, if you can even find the menu/submenu(s) to adjust, which aren't intuitive, and gives a solution regarding that ultimate windows tweaker. I was hoping someone here would have experienced the exact same issue, and experienced the fix :)

not exactly an easy procedure, especially if you don't know all that to begin with, and doing that for every file I need to edit - not gonna be fun, hence trying to get a global setting. Anyway I'll have a look at that ownership extension, cheers :thumbsup

Jel, I feel for you...

I love my 10-year-old Dell XP box, but it's 10 years old and MS is going to hit the XP kill switch in about 3 months, so something has to give.

I hate to seem like I'm turning commie, but I think I'm going to buy a Mac (my last was a Mac Plus, the famous 'fish bowl' in the early 90's), now it may be a retina screened macbook pro
