What virus protection do you use?

What virus protection do you use?
Free or paid?

Scott McD 11-20-2013 01:44 AM

Malware Variants in the Wild
==================

Windows: 350,000+ (since 2000)
Android: 718,000+ (since 2011 - **NICE ACCOMPLISHMENT GOOGLE!!**)
Apple (Mac OS/X and iOS): <100 (since 2000) :thumbsup

HTMwrestling 11-20-2013 02:06 AM

Lmao @ Android stats, what the fuck?

But anyway, free Microsoft Security Essentials for virus scans, with Malwarebytes free and some other free scanners randomly (online and off)

Online Armor firewall (free version), or any rule-based whitelist firewall that will prevent things from calling home without asking. I've used Comodo and another I can't remember on older computers, could swear it started with a Z.

NoScript for Firefox + other adblocker extensions. Block stuff by default.

Uninstall Java if you don't need it.

facialfreak 11-20-2013 02:19 AM

Android is a malware creator's WET DREAM ... mostly due to OS fragmentation.

If you have an Android phone or tablet, YOU NEED TO BE RUNNING AN ANTI-MALWARE/ANTI-VIRUS PROGRAM!!! I recommend AVAST! Free Mobile Security to all of my store clients.

http://www.avast.com/en-ca/free-mobile-security

** I also highly recommend the FREE flavor of Avast Antivirus for my Windows clients - I've tried them all, and right now, Avast is the best AV software IMHO - finding what even many of the 'popular' premium Antivirus softwares do not detect!!

I used to be a Panda (premium) fan, and then Panda started missing lots of the new generation threats ... I liked AVG until about 3 years ago when their results started going to hell, and it seemed like they stipped updating their definitions as often. The reason I love Avast (FREE flavor), is because it finds problems other premium AV softwares miss, as well as having a built-in ROOT KIT scanner/remover that works even better than Kaspersky's stand-alone TDSS Killer software.

Is Norton shit?

Arnox 11-20-2013 02:24 AM

I use common sense.

Yes, Norton is shit.

facialfreak 11-20-2013 02:34 AM

Both Norton (Symantec) and McAfee are total shit ... The are major bloatware ... that is to say, that the amount of system resources they consume, for the job that they do (or should we say "do not" ...), doesn't justify using them. They will degrade the performance on most average appointed hardware, while leaving many threats/issues undetected.

rastan 11-20-2013 02:36 AM

Malware antibytes is very good, and eset. those two go hand-in-hand very well and have kept me safe for years.

facialfreak 11-20-2013 02:37 AM

Anybody who has replaced their Windows Media Player with VideoLAN's VLC Player, will instantly understand what I mean when I talk about BLOATWARE ....

RAM manufacturers love sloppy-coded, bloated software ... :thumbsup

Bitdefender Total Security

iwaxoff 11-20-2013 04:55 AM

security essentials and malwarebytes works good for me

247mg 11-20-2013 04:58 AM

Norton and McAfee are worst ever antivirus who detect system files some time as a virus or spyware...

wehateporn 11-20-2013 05:05 AM

I normally go unprotected, but I spend a lot of time removing viruses from friend's PCs, one had the sophisticated Norton virus which poses as antivirus software, it had even linked itself direct to his bank account :2 cents:

Comodo internet security is the best free firewall/antivirus.

georgeyw 11-20-2013 05:33 AM

L-pink recommended marlboroackbytes and so far so good.

seeandsee 11-20-2013 05:39 AM

Paid Bitdefender with free Comodo firewall, blocks great for now, no problems...

Darkcrni 11-20-2013 05:47 AM

Nod32, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Avg from time to time.

Hey marlborack, serious question, your people in the Philippines safe?

PuffyCash_Megan 11-20-2013 07:35 AM

AVG over here.. they offer free or paid... When I ran Mcafee or Norton it completely froze my machine to a halt.

Spunky 11-20-2013 07:44 AM

Tried Kaspersky but after horrible tech support I went back to Norton 360.always liked Norton and haven't had many problems with it

madtwin 11-20-2013 08:31 AM

If you're looking for freeware, good and eating minimum system resources AV solutions then try:

Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition
Spybot - Search & Destroy
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
Microsoft Security Essentials

VirusTotal - Free Online Virus, Malware and URL Scanner - free online service that analyzes files and URLs enabling the identification of viruses, worms, trojans and other kinds of malicious content detected by antivirus engines and website scanners.

VirusTotal Uploader - handy little tool that allows you to send max.32MB files straight from your disk to VirusTotal online scan using right click's SendTo system menu.

:2 cents:

Agreed! Avast is the way to go! It's free, fast, and does not use all your resources! :thumbsup

anexsia 11-20-2013 08:45 AM

I use AVAST now...they seem to be on top of things and their free antivirus program is fucking GREAT! I used to use Microsoft Security Essentials but they started slipping once Windows 8 came out and Microsoft started focusing on Defender.

In my opinion, AVAST is the BEST free antivirus you can get currently

Magnetron 11-20-2013 09:14 AM

AVAST free version catches shit that AVG and Malwarebytes fails to.

ESET and/or Avast

PornDiscounts-V 11-20-2013 10:58 AM

Windows Defender.

I used to be a die hard Norton fan back in the day. Then I got my first virus using it in like 2002. I switched the McAfee and was virus free until 2009. Then I switched to Windows Defender and never looked back. Virus free ever since.

erotismo 11-20-2013 12:05 PM

Try Condoms!

MrBottomTooth 11-20-2013 12:08 PM

I don't run av on my android phone and don't personally know anyone that does.

Has anyone actually had their android phone infected? I've never even heard of it happening.

edit: nevermind, just read this:
http://www.zdnet.com/first-case-of-a...ed-7000020292/
sounds like you have to be a complete idiot to get your phone infected

JockoHomo 11-20-2013 12:09 PM

Norton Internet Security

Works flawlessly
Uses almost no system resources
Runs in the background and you never know it's there - Protecting you

Can NOT recommend it enough and I have tried them ALL.
