It was real - see WSJ article on it. He had hidden safety wires so if he fell he wouldn't die, but he didn't fall. He was standing on the mirrors and did the splits.

and the trucks drove backwards to further show the control they have from dynamic steering.

And any stunts like this of course have tons of safety precautions in place which are removed from the video during post production. Without it they would never be able to get insurance for the shoot and without Insurance, no one would ever touch it.

Because it was shot forward with him starting in a split and then moving to straight up.
That way the trucks would only have to make sure they continued to get closer, but
not closer than "X" feet.
