How many of you have ever contacted

...your Representative or Senator prior to their voting on a major bill.

How many of you do not pay attention to what bills are up for a vote?

You are on your honor to answer truthfully.

Me too.

I am a little bit more involved in the local stuff, however. For example, my hometown here just had a meeting about out city services and a price increase. I knew about it in advance, wasn't too happy about it, but didn't exactly show up to complain either. It did pass and my water & garbage will go up - no biggie. My town is having a lot of financial issues, and there are a lot more important matters - such as getting our local police force fully staffed again.

I am completely apathetic to politics and feel that contacting them would be a total waste of time as they already have their agenda fixed and act out of total self-interest.

The political system in the USA is designed to give the illusion of freedom of choice but is just that...and illusion.

Back when I cared, I only ever paid attention to local politics. That is the only area I believe the people can make a difference. Everything else is a dog and pony show.

Because of the nature of my business...I engaged in for more than twenty years of my life...I had to pay attention to city and county politics and we had many head butting occasions.

I have on more than one occasion. Mainly received lip service.

One Senior Senator's office contacted me on former NSA Director Michael Hayden's appointment as the CIA Director's questioning by the US Senate panel approving his appointment. I encouraged such questioning as to expose Hayden for what he was -- I guess the Senator did not see things as I did.

In the end Hayden resigned and now that Senator is retiring. I was vindicated by history? Michael Hayden set the policies during his tenure that led to the NSA scandals of today during his service at the NSA during the GW Bush administration.

I have also contacted various Senators and Committee Chairs on issues related to their voting on the US PATRIOT Act. Primarily on the repeal of its most repressive sections that IMHO are not within the framework nor spirit of the US Constitution on the act's renewal.

Mostly it is pissing in the wind but it is worth the trouble.

Well...I am in their face about one thing or another...I am sure...more often then they or their staff appreciate. Alot of people seem to think that contacting a congressman is a waste of time...but it really is not.

I once asked my congressman...at that point in time...to investigate a military matter which involved a person that I knew. The congressman and his staff got on it...and suddenly the military started...moving their ass and responding. The outcome was a favorable one.

When I lived in Northern California, the local rep owned the local skating rink, talked to him on several occasions

Yeah, because that's such an important issue.
