U.S. citizens get more organs than they give

U.S. Citizens Get More Organs Than They Give
Donations From Foreign Residents on the Rise

The whispers started as soon as Jesica Santillan was declared dead nine days ago. Should two sets of hearts and lungs -- considered the scarcest transplantable organs -- have gone to an illegal immigrant?

But American citizens are more likely to benefit from organs donated by noncitizens than the other way around, according to the nation's coordinating transplant agency.

"As a percentage, every year, U.S. citizens receive more organs than they donate," said Anne Paschke, a spokeswoman for the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), which links organ donors with recipients nationwide.

In 2001, the last complete year for which statistics are available, U.S. citizens received 96.2 percent of the transplants in the country, Paschke said. By contrast, 94.8 percent of organ donors were citizens.

That was really sad what happened to that girl. But I think the parents should have donated her organs.

Hey numnuts, she wasn't an illegal immigrant, she was a little girl from Mexico whose parents happened to have a rich and influential friend who raised enough money for the transplabnt.

And that shit article you're citing is just some liberal intelectual masturbation bullshit.

I swear some of the replies on this thread are from the twilight zone.

Some right wing GFY members were complaining because non-citizens were supposedly stealing all our great American organs. I post an article that proves that we're stealing their organs, not the other way around, and people call me some liberal nut.

I guess facts are just too liberal and too nutty for Rush fans. :1orglaugh

Don't forget everyone, Brad voted for Ralph Nader in 2000!

iroc409 03-02-2003 11:40 PM

And now for the rest of the story...

Her parents were told by the doctors her organs were too full of antibotics and anti-rejection drugs etc. to be used. They were willing to otherwise, and were extreamly hurt by the accusations that it was their decision not to donate her organs.

Do you sit around all day surfing the web looking for anything remotley anti-American thing you can find and then post it here?

It's obvious you don't care who the sourse is as long as there is a link to it - it must be true?

Try another hobby - it's really getting old and very predictable.

I registered with the bone marrow registry...as for the rest of my organs.. I don't think anyone would want them with all of the partying I used to do.

Well, I remember a story in the news a few years back... There was some political figure that needed a transplant and an organ donor that was brought to the hospital after a car accident died...and the big deal was that the hospital didn't do all they could do to save the guys life and guess who got the kidney--yep, the political dude. The "donors" family sued the Hospital and won...I'm trying to find the article online right now. It makes you wonder.
