I want to drop the modem/router provided to me by Time Warner. I need strong wireless capabilities from the router. Should I get a combo unit or separate units for each? Which units are good these days? I have not bought either in several years.

I just purchased a great new wired/wireless-n router that has fantastic reviews online, the Asus RT-N66U. Works great, has three antenna, and works on the 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz bandwidths. I used to use Linksys routers but I don't believe in that built in antenna bullshit anymore. The Asus has a lot of features, including guest network capabilities. One can plug a network hard drive and printer straight into it. -

i bought this one recently too. i got it for 129 plus taxes from newegg.ca with a promo code. is it overkill? i don't know, i was having trouble with range with my isp router/modem combo. no problem now. the admin panel is great too. though i hear ac routers are even better but if your wireless card doesn't support it, its pointless.Last edited by BlackCrayon; 10-30-2013, 03:37 PM.you don't know you're wearing a leash if you sit by the peg all day..Comment

Even though the Asus is way more powerful than my old Linksys G router, I am still having some issues getting a consistently good Wi-Fi signal in my master bedroom on the diagonally opposite side of the house from my office where the router is. So I just spent another $99 on an Asus dual bandwidth signal booster to plug into a bedroom wall outlet. Hopefully that and a few tweaks I made to the settings gives me a stronger and more reliable signal there.Comment

i am still using linksys, but last week ordered new one , its still in transit.
it has most transmit power in that range, 500 mW.

edit: i suggested this to my cousin too,
but if you want really powerful get the dual band router i.e. 2.4 and 5 ghz both in the same.
