CDC: 'We've reached the end of antibiotics'

'We've reached the end of antibiotics': Top CDC expert declares that 'miracle drugs' that have saved millions are no match against 'superbugs' because people have overmedicated themselves

Full story http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...hemselves.html

"A high-ranking official with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has declared in an interview with PBS that the age of antibiotics has come to an end.

'For a long time, there have been newspaper stories and covers of magazines that talked about "The end of antibiotics, question mark?"' said Dr Arjun Srinivasan. 'Well, now I would say you can change the title to "The end of antibiotics, period.?'

The associate director of the CDC sat down with Frontline over the summer for a lengthy interview about the growing problem of antibacterial resistance.

Srinivasan, who is also featured in a Frontline report called 'Hunting the Nightmare Bacteria,' which aired Tuesday, said that both humans and livestock have been overmedicated to such a degree that bacteria are now resistant to antibiotics.

?We're in the post-antibiotic era,' he said. 'There are patients for whom we have no therapy, and we are literally in a position of having a patient in a bed who has an infection, something that five years ago even we could have treated, but now we can?t.?.

Dr Srinivasan offered an example of this notion, citing the recent case of three Tampa Bay Buccaneers players who made headlines after reportedly contracting potentially deadly MRSA infections, which until recently were largely restricted to hospitals.

About 10 years ago, however, the CDC official began seeing outbreaks of different kinds of MRSA infections in schools and gyms.

?In hospitals, when you see MRSA infections, you oftentimes see that in patients who have a catheter in their blood, and that creates an opportunity for MRSA to get into their bloodstream,? he said.

i absolutely 100% unequivocably think you are completely on point with this.

if anyone gets a chance, watch that frontline episode.

i am glad the era is over, i think it was well-motivated but became perverted over the years and distorted by profits and thinking that anti-biotics are a panacea. moreiver, doctors have abused them profusely. i can't tell you how many times i've been prescribed a broad-spectrum ab without a culture! huh? just throwing an ab at me willy nilly and if it doesn't work just come back and you'll throw another at me? fuuuuuuuuck

why not run a culture? i've been denied requests to culture in fact, to get a specific anti-biotic. fucking fuck wow.

96ukssob 10-27-2013 12:28 PM

This is why I ONLY take medication when it's absolutely necessary. My wife will wake up with a stuffed nose and call the doctor for an Rx, while I will be almost on my deathbed before I take something.

To many people rely on meds as an easy solution, but you need to let your body build up antibodies to fight off germs.

MrMaxwell 10-27-2013 01:00 PM

People are so fucking stupid
Taking antis without going to the doctor, doctors throwing antis at everyone for no good reason, morons who do not finish antis when they're prescribed, etc

Idiots

It is no fucking wonder.

Seriously. We take our kids to the doctor's office when they catch funk at school and the first thing she does is throw some sort of liquid amoxycillin or some shit like that. She chalks it up for kids just being kids and not washing their hands, recess playground, etc. As well as that may be all fine and dandy, the fact of the matter is it has made me stop bringing them to the doctor's office altogether.

When one of our children gets sick, we take them to the hospital ER. It may take a bit longer but they run the whole 9 on them. Chest xrays, throat swabs, etc. They usually end up giving us a short term script for whatever their outcome is but it's at that point whether or not we gauge if we should take them to their general practitioner, specialist, etc. or not. :2 cents:

_Richard_ 10-28-2013 08:11 AM

think this is scare tactics against creating these super bugs? Antibiotics is fairly effective

Until your body build up an immunity to them and they are useless... and then when you really need them? You're fucked. :2 cents:

Careful, the chances you will become infected in a hospital are huge. Nosocomial infections (infections originating in a hospital) kill more than 100,000 per year and infect millions of patients.

This whole super germ shit is serious stuff.

hospitals are petri dishes with revolving doors. come on in, get some staph and please exit to your left.

iwould bet a doctor's office is almost as disgusting.

MaDalton 10-28-2013 08:47 AM

i'd bet that 99% of all antibiotics prescriptions are completely unnecessary

I don't know if it's that high but I'd say you're close.

Whatever happened to people just allowing themselves to try to heal naturally first? There was a time when you'd get a bad cold and you'd rest, take vitamin C, drink hot soup and maybe some Nyquil or Neo Citron or something like it from the drug store. But slowly over time people have gotten so the first sign of a sore throat and they're getting prescribed abs.

For those posting funnies, MRSA is no joke.

you forgot eating chicken stuffed with antibiotics!

Tom_PM 10-28-2013 10:00 AM

Even if you've only had penicillin and nothing stronger in the past, they're likely to give you the most ultra-modern antibiotic in the world if you go to a hospital. Even though there were probably 50 weaker ones that would have cured you just fine. Hospitals are the place where you're most likely to catch something after all. Kinda shitty deal.

But the line about people over-medicating themselves is funny. Nobody does it to themselves, it's done to them whether out of ignorance or what have you.

Barry-xlovecam 10-28-2013 10:46 AM

Well, modern medicine in the 1400's used leaches to cure your ills ...

Just for the record, when I was a child my paediatricians were constantly injecting me with simple penicillin for bronchial infections ( bacterial colds). Vcillin, amoxycillin, still work fine for me.

So, maybe the new "super-bugs" are natural mutations that only occur infrequently but propagate very successfully?

Hospitals are breeding grounds for germs. So, don't take any antibiotics use leeches ...

I normally agree with you, but you are wrong on this. While your ONE case, AB's were needed, MOST people are getting them for colds, or just about anything.

Then doctors throw about 2-3 different ones at you, without figuring out what one you need. Also mixed with AB's in cows and Chickens, things are changing. Take a quick look at third world countries that can barely cure the super chlamydia.

I see people posting on Facebook all the time, about what whould I do to reduce my kids Fever of 100 or 101. Umm NOTHING, the Fever is killing the bad shit.

You are usually very intelligent but you must be up the fuck out of your mind to take a child to the ER when it is not absolutely the fuck necessary. You KNOW how many HORRIBLE infections people manage to pick up at the ER... right? If you insist on doing this, for the love of god, make sure they kids don't touch ANYTHING when they go in and bring your own sheet to put down for them to lay on or something.

Meanwhile, if you're one of these who gives a kid an anti at the drop of a hat, someday when they REALLY need one, it won't work.. So, be careful!!!

I would never accept antis growing up.. not unless they knew exactly what ailed me and what one it needed. Now, I am sick every two years.
