Non-smokers can't get the flu

So says the doctor I just went to.

He asks me, "Are you a smoker?" I said yes...but down to half a pack a day.

He says, "You wouldn't be here asking for antibiotics if you didn't smoke."

So remember kids - according to a "health care professional" - if you don't smoke...you don't need a flu shot.

That was cool then! I guess I am lucky enough!

Markul 10-25-2013 09:46 AM

Great news this!!

Smokers are more likely to get the Flu for unknown reasons. The antibiotics aren't for the Flu, they are for complications caused by the Flu; smokers are more likely to get such complications.

Keep in mind that antibiotics effectively wipe out your immune system, it will take a full year to recover from them :2 cents:

i like getting the poo... :2 cents:

Just flu symptoms I had. Cough, congestion...slight fever. Didn't want it to linger so I went for antibiotics.

Yeah, doc's a quack...but I got what I needed. :thumbsup

I've actually got a fairly good immune system. This is the first time in many years I've needed a boost to fight something.

The wife has no immune system due to infusion meds she's on for RA - so it's best if I fight off the flu asap to lessen her chances of getting it.

I think you're right.

Lots of co-workers and people I know are down with it already. The waiting room was jammin' at the doctor's office earlier.

My doctor is a smoking Nazi as well - Last year after I spent a month in hospital suffering from the worst depression ever he asked if I 'had taken the opportunity to quit' - I could have punched his lights out...

I spent a month under a table crying and thinking of ways of killing myself - Of course I also thought 'well this would be a good time to quit the cigs'.....

Fucking idiot...

Well...I get it that they're mandated as health care people to at least make the attempt at getting patients to stop smoking. That's expected. Comes with the territory.

I just don't like doctors who insult my intelligence with stupid justifications.

I've never had a flu shot and don't smoke. Only had the flu a few times in my life, oddly, when I lived with smokers or spent a lot of time around them. Now that I go out of my way to distance my self from cigarette smoke, I no longer get the flu.

Perhaps your doctor isn't too far off base. There is no doubt smoking leads to a lot of illness and disease.

All those chemicals in them weaken your immune system. So it does help indirectly.

I was thinking the same thing. I never go the flu and I don't smoke. Anecdotal evidence can be strange though.

Edit - it has an impact http://www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/smoking.htm

Does the occasional reefer count as a smoker?

garce 10-25-2013 12:43 PM

Next time tell the doctor that 99% of pretentious, holier-than-thou, preaching assholes end up with a fat lip and a broken nose. Then punch the cocksucker right in the middle of his fat face.

If the doctor is a "she", you might be better off just saying, "Yes, doctor. Of course doctor. Thank you, doctor." Then just imagine yourself punching the condescending cunt in the face.

Equality only matters if you are not a white male. Deal with it.

adendreams 10-25-2013 01:49 PM

stupid statement by the doctor - but when you see a health care professional it's kind of their job to let you know when you have a habit that will kill you (vast majority)

Until you know someone that dies as a direct result from cigarettes you really just dont have the sense of doom....RIP one of my best friends Dan...cigs took him out like a mob hit man...except it was a 6 month horror death...not fun to witness - I went to doctors visits with him and almost passed out hearing the impending doom...fucking reaper right there in the room. Not Fun

My boss (and good friend) recently passed away on Sept. 20th - cancer. We saw the deterioration over the past year as he lost ground on the battle. I've also lost a few family members to smoking-related cancer.

I don't know many people who haven't lost friends/family to cancer these days.
