There are mysteries that are so eerie and strange that they boggle the mind for days on end. The case of Elisa Lam is one of them. In February 2013, this 21-year-old student from Vancouver, Canada, was found dead inside the Cecil Hotel’s rooftop water tank in Los Angeles. The L.A. County Department of Coroner ruled the death “accidental due to drowning” and said no traces of drugs or alcohol were found during the autopsy. However, there is much more to the story than what is implied by police reports. The first piece of evidence that needs to be considered is an elevator surveillance tape that recorded Elisa’s behavior only a few moments before she lost her life.

The four-minute video posted on YouTube shows Elisa pressing all of the elevator buttons and waiting for it to move. Seeing that the elevator doors are not closing, starts behaving extremely bizarrely. Here’s the video.




At first, Elisa enters the elevator and apparently presses all of its buttons. She then waits for something to happen but, for some reason, the elevator door doesn’t shut. She starts to look around, as if she is expecting (or hiding from) someone. At 1:57, her arms and hands start moving in a very strange matter (almost not human) as she appears to be talking to someone, something … or nothing at all. She then walks away. The elevator door then shuts and appears to start working again.

Right after the events of the video, Elisa apparently gained access to the rooftop of the hotel, climbed to its water tank and, somehow, ended up drowning in it. Her body was found two weeks after her death, after hotel guests complained about the water’s taste and color. Incredible.

Seeing the surveillance footage, most people would conclude that she was under the influence of drugs. However, Elisa did not have a history of drug use and her autopsy concluded that no drugs were involved. When one looks at the context and the circumstances of this death, things become even more mysterious.

Cecil Hotel’s Dark History

Built in the 1920s to cater to “businessmen to come into town and spend a night or two”, Cecil Hotel was quickly upstaged by more glamorous hotels. Located near the infamous Skid Row area, the hotel began renting rooms on a long-term basis for cheap prices, a policy that attracted a shiftier crowd. The hotel’s reputation quickly went from “shifty” to “morbid” when it became notorious for numerous suicides and murders, as well as lodging famous serial killers.

“Part of its sordid history, involves two serial killers, Richard Ramirez and Jack Unterweger.

Now on death row, Ramirez, labeled “the Nightstalker”, was living at the Cecil Hotel in 1985, in a top floor room. He was charged 14 dollars a night. In a building filled with transients, he remained unnoticed as he stalked and killed his 13 female victims. Richard Schave, said “He was dumping his bloody clothes in the Dumpster, at the end of his evening and returned via the back entrance.”

Jack Unterweger, was a journalist covering crime in Los Angeles for an Austrian magazine in 1991. “We believe he was living at the Cecil Hotel in homage to Ramirez,” Schave said.

He is blamed with killing three prostitutes in Los Angeles, while being a guest at the Cecil.

In the 50’s and 60’s the Cecil was known as a place that people would go to jump out of one of the hotel’s windows to commit suicide.

Helen Gurnee, in her 50s, leaped from a seventh floor window, landing on the Cecil Hotel marquee, on October 22, 1954.

Julia Moore jumped from her eighth floor room window, on February 11, 1962.

Pauline Otton, 27, jumped from a ninth floor window after an argument with her estranged husband, on October 12, 1962. Otton landed on George Gianinni, 65, who was walking on the side walk, 90 feet below. Both were killed instantly.

There was also a murder of one of the residents. “Pigeon Goldie” Osgood, a retired telephone operator, known for protecting and feeding pigeons in a nearby park, was found dead in his ransacked room on June 4, 1964. He had been stabbed, strangled, and raped. The crime still remains unsolved.”

Elisa Lam’s case is yet another sordid addition to the hotel’s history and can lead us to ask: “What the hell is wrong with that place”?

it's a hostel sort of hotel and loaded with hot foreign girls that come to la la to try to be models and what not.

I still believe that some people live on the edge of society and we think they are all normal until one day they snap. Vendzilla is a classic example of this; It's only a matter of time before he snaps.

This was her time. She was in a strange hotel, felt comfortable, and something snapped in her. Seems to me like she was running and hiding from someone.

Why can't I read the timestamp on the video ? What time of day or night was that ? Is that darkness outside or just a black wall ? Was there nobody at all on that floor that heard or saw anything she was saying ? I didn't see ANY shadows or reflections of anybody else in the corridor ? What's her medical and psychiatric record ? Was she prone to behaviour like this before ? The article said this was "moments" before she died ! It was two weeks before they found her, there could have been many hours between that video and her actual death ? How long was she booked into the hotel for and wouldn't the hotel have noticed she hadn't checked out, presumably they would have gone to her room to get it ready for the next guest. Her stuff would have still been there ?

Elisa's death is uncomfortably similar to a horror movie plot. The 2005 film Dark Water (a remake of a 2002 Japanese movie by the same name) tells the story of a young woman found drowned in a hotel water tank. A scene in the movie depicts an elevator malfunctioning, and a character is named Cecilia. Cecilia/Cecil?

Just days after Elisa Lam's body was found, national health experts were called into Skid Row near the hotel to investigate a deadly persistent tuberculosis (TB) outbreak that local health officials called the largest in a decade. More than 4,500 people may have been exposed to tuberculosis and scientists linked the outbreak to a TB strain unique to L.A. A test used to diagnose tuberculosis, particularly in patients with advanced immunosuppression? The LAM-ELISA.

Starting to formulate some theories on this, vulnerable girl, stranger in town, upon arrival at The Cecil is targeted by a guest or employee of the hotel or possibly an outside contractor. Most likely to be an outside contractor (maintenance) works there regularly. Elisa is well aware of this. In the lift she first bends down low to look at the buttons as she is very short sighted and doesn't have her glasses. (Why did she leave her room without her glasses ? Were they stolen ? Where are they now ? Did she leave her room in a hurry ? Where was she going ?) Don't know enough to answer these questions. Anyway, the reason she then pushes all the lift buttons quickly is she is trying to close the lift door in a hurry but she can't as somebody is stood outside pressing the up/down button keeping it open. They won't let her go. The wild gesticulation outside the lift is actually sign language, she is telling the camera in the lift that she has been caught. Everything else is pure guesswork but someone or some persons well known to that hotel murdered her. It seems as if Elisa kind of knew what was coming. The motive is also not clear, there was no fight, nothing sexual.

there's no correlation between the skid row outbreak and the cecil hotel.

also, the cistern she was found in did not supply drinking water or bathing water. the cistern had low pressure, was checked, and the girl was discovered. there was an autopsy and susbequent toxicology report on her, there were no suspect chemicals found or foulplay cause of death.

i know people who were helping the homeless during the outbreak.. it wasn't one that started 7 years ago.. they had a serious issue just after this story

however now that i think about it, stupid wondering how many died while living on the street

1 case of reported tb in skid row is considered a flare up. the authorities work very hard to keep it all on lockdown. there's a city dept that handles this specifically.

also, skid row is one of the most contained, if not the most contained, homeless areas of any major us city, they simply never roam out of that area, they know the consequences for the most part- there's been a huge deal about that as well here, gentrification, nevertheless, there are rarely rarely ever any homeless people on the block the cecil fronts, hell that whole block pretty much, it's adjacent to skid row actually.

yes, i live in the parking lot for my building, i fing it much more convenient than actually living in the building. i have internet here too, obviously had to string a cable though, no wireless.

here's a decent article on the dtla revitalization, the article is from 3 years ago, things have ramped up even more. urban sprawl left the downtown area for dead decades and decades ago, the rebirth of dtla actually began way back in 1999 with the adaptive reuse initiative- gutting old buildings instead of tearing them down. my building is the oldest commercial medium rise structure in los angeles, it's over 10o years old. my neighborhood, and the one the cecil is in, is called the historic core of los angeles.
