Hosting website from your house?
Hi GFY,
How many of you are hosting your websites from a computer at your house? Does anyone here know the basic steps on how to do this? :helpme:helpme:helpme:helpme |
i mean you could but . . . . . why
With so many inexpensive options |
Inexpensive as in what price range? Give me some examples here, the companies I know of are a few hundred a month for dedicated, and the more space the more expensive.
Clarify? |

750gb storage unmetered bandwidth $69.95/mnth We've used them for many years. Just satisfied customers. |
Just not worth it unless you live in a data center...or you don't have much traffic in which case bandwidth would not be a factor. Just search local colo and take your server to their data center. I'm sure you can get a spot well under $100/month.

Here you go: www.amerinoc.com . Five dollars a month. Most likely more than you need, for now. |
-Hi Dad! Can you go to my house you need to reboot my server!
-Ah true! you are in Mexico with me! eummmmm |

Here 1.99 for 36 months contract 1and1 Hostgator is having a sale very soon I use all the above. If you are a small operator got with share hosting. Then there is a plethora of hoster in this board sandmanfrom nicepricehosting is very good as well |
I used to, from 1997-2000 ..then moved a co-located server to a provider. I had three DS1's (T1's) into my home, used a cisco router and my server initially was a dual Pentium pro 200 with 10,000 rpm scsi drives...its cheaper now days to just get a dedicated server somewhere

I was paying $1500 a month per DS1 ..

DigitalOcean $5 a month for VPS, very nice dedicated servers from $29 a month from OVH...
Sometimes I host things from home, but it's mostly for fun playing around with different server software and such. |
Do this: Setup a Windows machine and run IIS at home, or setup a Linux machine and run Apache if you want, but do it for FUN or do it to learn how it works but don't plan to use it for commercial services it will cost you a fortune in time.
Install your business site at any host provider you like so you can concentrate on the important things. |

Plus, I think you would need to check with your ISP to make sure it is cool. |
Pirates like to host their own shit. Arrrrghhh

This thread is very interesting.
Im on my way to upgrade my internet connection at 1Gbps and planning to buy another 1Gbps. The real problem is server costs since an intel xeon E5620 with 8GB, 600GB hdd is aprox 4000$. Another option reasonable at costs may be buying two I7 desktops with 64 gb ram,2x2 T sata3 which cost around 1000$ second-hand each and using them as homemade servers for a tube where to host videos. :winkwink: |
Pricing depends on your spec needs. Inexpensive means different numbers to different people. M3Server has fully managed server plans.
|
Most people don't have a high enough upload speed/connection to keep more than 1 or 2 surfers at a time happy.
|
I am learning windows server 2008 as we speak.
Godaddy has fucked me. Will keep you updated. |

WAMP/LAMP is what you should look into.

Almost all ISPs prohibit hosting webservers on their connections. Besides, hosting is so cheap, why bother?
|
Why give your self more liability

pretty stupid idea :2 cents:

its fine if you have a fast symmetric internet connection 100mb or 1gb, just install centos and webmin or similar, you may need some other stuff like rpc so you can reboot if the server crashes when your not at home, an apc in case the power goes out and a static ip address, I used to do it in the early days. its fun to do but check its ok with your isp first.

It's possible to host a website from your house, but it's not advisable. And in many cases it's not permitted. It's highly unlikely that your ISP will allow HTTP requests to your computer.
If I may suggest a few alternatives: Hostgator erhaps the best host I've ever used is Hostgator. They have awesome plans, fast support, and I've never had a crash even with high-traffic sites. I believe I pay something like $15 /mo for one account, which includes "unlimited space, unlimited bandwidth". I host a two blogs with them. Amazon Web Services I use almost their entire suite of services. Amazon offers a free tier which includes 750 free hours (1 month) of EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud - a computer "instance" that can be used as a web server) on a m1.micro instance. It's small, but it can host and run a fairly big site with traffic. You can graduate up to an m1.small instance for about $56/mo and you have full control of the server. Note: you need a solid understanding of administering a web server. This is not like having an account created for you at Hostgator and using cPanel (but for advanced users, it's nice to have additional control, super-user capabilities, etc). |
I don't know of many ISPs that would provide you with uplink suitable to serve any reasonable amount of users at the same time...
|
decent internet to be able to do it right is going to cost to more then just renting a server somewhere.
its a dumb idea there is a reason almost no one does it. |

you can get dirt cheap server from http//www.ovh.us for $39 or some great SSD powered VPS from DigitalOcean from $5 almost not worth the electricity... |
I think you are looking for something like WampServer(.com) - but everything has already been said. Or you could just try out a XenLayer.com hosting package for a month for free.
|
ISP's? only a chimp would setup a webserver on a cable model...
if your gonna do it do it right, call your local phone company and ask them to put a DS1 (or DS3) into your home. that's what I did. what you get is a point to point connection, meaning it goes from your house, to the Telco with no one else tapping into your bandwidth. you have the full bandwidth up and down and you can run your stuff like your an ISP Quote:

I used to host a BBS back in the 80's and 90's... It was only active from 10pm to 6am. I was about 15 years old or so when I started it and I used to promote it as the end all place to get your porn. In effect I had guys dropping off porn to me! I had this back story on it where I was a retired guy in his late 50's that had every single Playboy in my collection... blah blah...
Back around 2002 I hosted my own site on my DSL line. It was a TGP. Got it to about 15,000 users a day and my ISP sent someone to my house. He basically told me they 1) don't allow hosting sites at your house and 2) if they did they certainly would allow porn. I needed to take it down right then and there and never put it back up or they'd cancel my account. I found a $24.95 hosting account and my site went from 15,000 to about 70,000 people a day almost immediately.. apparently my computer and connection sucked... |
