iPad mini vs nexus 7?

Anyone have or used the nexus 7 tablet that has also used a iPad mini? I'm getting annoyed with my mini because it's wifi is absolutely shit. The range is total crap and it constantly gets lost when browsing the net via wifi. I can click a link here on gfy for example and it will 404 meanwhile if I refresh a second tab at the same time it finds the web page.

I have a Nexus 4 cellphone and I'm pretty happy with it. I found someone on Craigslist that wants to trade a nexus 7 for a mini and I'm thinking about taking up the offer. I just don't know anyone with the nexus 7, to get any first hand user review..

I got my son a Nexus 7 for Xmas last year. He loves it, but there are a many apps that are only available on the iPad. So I guess it depends on what apps you use.

For navigation, speed, scaling, etc. Nexus is fantastic. I find they're fairly equal.

I'm not really a apple fan boy. I only have this mini because I traded a broken older iMac for it. So far I'm zero for two with apple products actually working as expected.. While I will admit the tablet has a nice size screen and a pretty awesome battery life, the whole wifi deal kills it..

The biggest thing I'm worried about with the nexus 7 is how it's battery life is. My nexus 4 burns the battery pretty damn fast and that's my only real complaint. If the tablet is the same, then I'd probably just deal with the mini and it's short comings..

Annoying example of how shitty the wifi is, it has 404'd 2 times to make this post..

I don't own either but I've been comparing and looking for phablet. I think I would go with the Nexus 7 or Galaxy Note3.

My advice would be to take it back to the apple store. Explain calmly and nicely the trouble shooting steps you have gone through. According to mac forums, they will swop it out for a new one for you.

Time it after Oct 22nd and you could even swing an upgrade to a retina mini iPad.

I have nexus 7 and I am pretty happy. Wifi antenna is on top-left and you have to be sure that it is up and not covered when you use it for best signal.

Your wifi issue sounds like a bad DNS server. Are you experiencing that issue with other hardware on your network? Even so, I recommend OpenDNS since they're faster. You can run diagnostics on almost any machine with namebench from Google Code.

In some cases I recommend Google DNS but I don't like giving them more information about me and my browsing habits.

To answer your question, I haven't tried the Nexus 7 but I'm hearing glistening reviews on it. I just got an iPad Mini and I like it. Though iOS 7 hasn't grown on me yet and it keeps crashing my iPhone!

Best of luck!

Also, on your comments on the wifi unit in the Mini:

No issues on the wifi reception for me. I live in a 1700sqft house and it always has an excellent connection.

We have a couple Airport Extremes in the house, including the latest one and I think our signal could probably be found from a few blocks over.

Got a nexus 7 2nd. Screen resolution is better that ipad mini and it way cheaper to buy. I can play game, read book, manga, watch netflix and all that on the wifi for 20 hours before I need to charge.

Here a nexus 7 2nd vs ipad mini review http://www.gizmag.com/ipad-mini-vs-nexus-7-2013/28450/

They say battery should be about 10 hours but it last way longer on mine. I can work 2 night shift of 10 hours without charging it. I use it to read manga and comic most the time and watch 1 movie by night.

It's a documented problem with iPad minis but Apple won't acknowledge it. It's same thing with the iMac I had and it booting to a white screen. It happened just out of warranty and they wouldn't do shit and it was also a common problem that had complaints all over the net, yet Apple wouldn't acknowledge it.

I would never buy another apple product and would have never paid cash for this mini.. I only traded a useless boat anchor for a slightly better one.

But apple products are superior and "just works"!

candyflip 10-12-2013 09:04 AM

Take the mini to Apple. It only came out a year ago. Thy will take care of you.

candyflip 10-12-2013 04:47 PM

The Nexus 7 gen 1is $130 new. I'd sell the mini and buy two of them.

I have not used a mini but I have had a Nexus7 for newly a year and I have never had a issue surfing the web. My web experience has been very good with the Nexus 7.

Your mileage may vary.

candyflip 10-13-2013 09:33 AM

Hell...I'll buy the Mini and get it taken care of. My apple store peeps always take care of me.

I just sold a 7 year old Macbook that I paid $799 (and got a free $200 iPod with at the time) for $350. The day before, I took it into the Apple store. It has been out of warranty for 6 years.

They replaced the Superdrive, replaced all the plastic and the keyboard. All the same day. Cost to me $0.

The week before I dumped a 4 year old Dell that cost quite a bit more than the Macbook for $200.

With Apple, you might pay more upfront, but they more than take care of you when you need it and if/when you decide to sell...you've got something people want and will pay good money for.

That said, I've built three Hackintosh desktops this year and will be doing that for as long as it's possible.

Ipad only. Android based hardware is crap.
