"Up Late" with Alec Baldwin Premieres Tonight on MSNBC

Veteran actor and Hollywood liberal Alec Baldwin has a new TV political talk show starting tonight on MSNBC.

May be interesting to see if Alec lasts, given his infamous temper... :party-smi

Apparently Alec, and his now 17yo daughter, model Ireland Baldwin (whose mother is Alec's ex, Kim Basinger), have made up:

Alec also had a more recent dust-up with a writer that accused his wife of tweeting on the phone at James Gandolfini's funeral:

His gay epithet pissed off the politically correct sensibilities of many on the left, and has provided more fodder for the right to attack Baldwin and MSNBC.

Here?s what Baldwin is aiming for: the interview he rarely gets himself. Baldwin was inspired in part by all the ?very frustrating and unsatisfactory? one-on-ones he?s endured.

?It was either just dull, or they ask me the same stuff or someone just clicked on the Internet and asked the Top Five things on Google. It was a very tedious format, and the entertainment press is just the worst of all. Ninety percent of them are just going through the motions. They don?t really care. ? I want to do a show that was more like how I would like to be treated if I were the guest on a show.?

The idea for TV sprang from his WNYC podcast, ?Here?s the Thing,? which Baldwin hoped essentially to replicate for network television. But when there were no slots available on NBC, MSNBC President Phil Griffin ?jumped up and said he had a time slot? for Baldwin.

Baldwin has expressed some interest in possibly entering politics at some point, so this could be his audition/stepping stone.

Alec is lucky that he is only doing a once a week program, and that he is the lead in for the cop/lock-up programming that MSNBC switches to over the weekend (strange demographic mash-up, lol).

nice stunt by MSNBC convincing him to do this, fully knowing how batshit crazy he can be. They're probably hoping he'll bring the crazy on and hopefully also get eyeballs to the channel

Al Franken was able to transition fairly well from entertainer to become a talk show host (Air America), and is now considered a thoughtful and respected US Senator.

Up Late With Alec Baldwin debuted on Friday at 10 p.m. ET, slotted in the same one hour frame as Real Time With Bill Maher. But unlike HBO's political talk show, Baldwin mostly refrained from slinging barbs in favor of offering an earnest but fast-moving discussion about policy issues.

"I was an early supporter of de Blasio's," Baldwin noted in his introduction. He went on to pepper the Democratic mayoral candidate with questions about job creation, income inequality and how de Blasio has dealt with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

After the commercial break, Baldwin segued from talking about Wall Street vs. Main Street politics to a discussion of de Blasio's views on legalizing marijuana and New York's Stop-and-Frisk police policy.

Up Late also showed video and still snippets of a de Blasio campaign ad as the host complimented the candidate for overcoming adversity. Conversation then turned to what he made of the idea of a "post-racial" New York.

The chat with de Blasio, which comprised the entirety of the show, ended with a polite handshake.

Before signing off, Baldwin then allowed some slight humor when describing Up Late's mission -- mentioning that both Lockup and Alan Keyes Is Making Sense had once appeared in the same time slot on MSNBC.

"I can't give a declaration of principles like Charles Foster Kane had for his newspapers," Baldwin said.

The show will be "more personal than promotional," he added. Academy Award nominated actress Debra Winger will be on next Friday's Up Late.
