Montreal people hate Americans?
 

Is it true? A couple of my friends went up to Montreal for a snowboard trip, and all I heard from them was that them Canadians HATE us Americans with a passion.
They would try to be nice, and say bonjour(sp) and other French words they picked up, but as soon as an English word came out of their mouth, Canadians all got an attitude.

So all ya Montreal people, is this true? Do you really have a deep rooted hate for us Americans?

It's all the idiot frenchies who can't speak english. They just hate english people and it's mostly ignorance and caused by separatist propagandha. I'm a frenchie however I don't hate the english, in fact I'm dating a girl from Ottawa.

Exactly. Many of the French in Canada are brought up to believe English speaking people are their enemy. There s actually a law in Quebec against businesses posting signs in English. It isnt just Americans that have trouble, its anyone who speaks English.

Your almost right, french has to be on top of the english name/writing, and the english portion must be i believe 55 or 70ish% smaller, I might be wrong on those numbers, but theres a % on how smaller than the french one

They would try to speak it and they had no problem with my friends. It's when the Jersey accent came out that them Frenchies got all snobby.
O well, Imma be up there for spring break in 2 weeks, I'm just curious I guess. What's there todo in Montreal anyways? LOL

Yep, they used to put blank stickers on imported wine bottles cuz there was no french description on the back. I'm telling you, they would ban access to english sites if they could. They're fascists who want to keep the french people in the dark.

There isn't any laws prohibiting posting signs in english, but you have to put the french translation also. That's the law.

Shit, apparently they were right. I've never been to Montreal, and my friends were. They said Montreal people hate us with a passion. I was curious to know if this is true, or if they happened to be running into ignorant people or if they were just being ignorant. So I came on here cause I knew there were a few Montrealers who could let me know. Sheesh.

Allright, what I was trying to say is that it's not true. Anyway, do you seriously think that so many americans would come visit Montreal if such ignorant facts were true?

That's ok. It's just that at a certain age "passions" do not reflect reality. Anyway, when I was working in a movie theater for like 10 years and many americans were pleased and loved Montreal because of everyone being so nice.

The opposite can also be true, there will always be some assholes but it's really not a majority. But trust me, it's not the case. We love americans. Well, maybe not the french from France, but that's another story. :glugglug

Dont worry, most of the people in Montreal have common sense are quite friendly. You will rarely have a problem. I just wanted to point out its the language you speak, not the fact your American that offends a few of them. Dont let a few biggots make you think the whole province hates you.

Here is deal, I'm from the usa but lived in Montreal for 5 years,

The french canadians hate the english canadians for political reasons that nobody here in the USA will ever begin to understand or care to understand, the english canadians think all americans are stupid, well at least the ones I met in Montreal.

All those 5 years all my friends where french canadians, the most friendly people you will ever meet, and the french chicks are the hottest....

French people from montreal hate ontarians especially, although some of us hate all english (mostly those that don't speak english)

americans, we love em, we find em funny as a bunch of them look stupid (read rednecks, cowboys, etc.)

depends where you go really.. .most my friends are french, and within our inner circles there's always a bunch of english people... never a problem...

but there's something boring about ontarians.... :P

Don't act like a tourist, mix in with the local people and learn about their custom and culture and you'll do fine in any part of the world.

In Montreal, avoid speaking english when you first approach someone, they hate that. Say a few French words and when they say "what do you speak English" then you can talk in English.
