I expected some looting after the Kenyan Westgate Mall Massacre. . .
But the level described in this article is almost unbelievable. Claiming the army actually PROLONGED the siege so they could loot from the stores as well as bloody wallets from corpses - making the identification process more difficult.

Holly shit!
How could that happen in a country full of seriously poor people who watch rich westerners buying up everything everyday. My GOD!! Who would have thought it even possible? |
Not surprising

Shocking call to arms aiming to keep the merchants protected from those whom they exploit on a daily basis.
Also, hype up the insurance claims this is a big media carnival let's not be stingy.. . |

Major Emmanuel Chirchir said the attackers were Abu Baara al-Sudani, Omar Nabhan, Khattab al-Kene and Umayr, names that were first broadcast by a local Kenyan television station. "I confirm those are the names of the terrorist," he said, in a Twitter message sent to The Associated Press. The identities of the men come as a private television station in Nairobi obtained and broadcast the CCTV footage from the Nairobi mall. The footage shows no more than four attackers. Also 3 soldiers died saving people. Personally, if my family was hungry and I had to take something off a rich person to feed them, I would. Washington D.C. is least honest city in America, study says |

A newly-commissioned Kenyan soldier makes 130,000 Kenyan shillings per month, which at today's rate of exchange is $1,500. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_much_d...t_earn_monthly That's way more than $5 a day - in fact it's more than a lot of Americans make, albeit being a Kenyan soldier does have it's drawbacks. My point, lost on all of the gregarious souls posting here, was that I EXPECTED LOOTING. Many human beings, African and otherwise, have larceny in their hearts, especially when no one is looking. What shocked me wasn't the looting, but that the military would prolong the siege by DAYS in order to have more time to ransack the place. Especially while the whole world was watching. That's way different than a crime of opportunity. That's CREATING the opportunity. |

I don't think anyone was prepared for that siege, and the deliberate lengthening would seem to be an unconfirmed rumor. But yes, soldiers in the theatre often commit abuses. Not just Kenyan soldiers. |
