It wasn't even a flaw in the system.

He had left a trail to a personal Gmail account and his LinkedIn account when shilling the site on BitCoinTalk.

nexcom28 10-02-2013 10:50 AM

It's a shame.

CAHEK 10-02-2013 10:55 AM

The government shuttered the site and seized approximately 26,000 Bitcoins worth approximately $3.6 million

Ulbricht has been charged with one count each of narcotics trafficking conspiracy, computer hacking conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy.

In perhaps the most surprising instance in the FBI complaint, the government alleges that DPR even used his site to try to arrange an assassination.

Ulbricht allegedly paid a bounty of 1,670 Bitcoins, about $150,000, to put out a murder hit on a Silk Road user seeking to extort him. Ulbricht was told that the crime had been carried out, although the FBI could not confirm any person was actually killed.

Agents found Ulbricht after Canadian border authorities routinely checked a package intended for his San Francisco home and discovered nine fake identification cards within, which Ulbricht allegedly was seeking to obtain to rent more servers to power Silk Road as it massively expanded.

The 29-year-old University of Texas graduate had first created a trail for himself, however, by asking for help working with Tor dark web tacticts on coding site StackOverflow.com, the complaint says. His original question appears to remain on the site here.

Ulbricht also appeared very active on social media. He?d recently flagged a video on YouTube, ?How To Get Away With Stealing,? calling it ?for later.?

The man behind Silk Road?s commission on the activity, the FBI alleges, has totaled 600,000 Bitcoins, or about $80 million by its own conversions.
I wonder how much bitcoins are worth in jail? :uhoh :Oh crap

hah, just like when the exchange farts, there's a bit of a dive but btc survives.

i'm confident it will do fine without silkroad, besides, it's all an investment now anyway. my real hope is it survives the mining phase and 99.9% of btc is mined, then we can see what it can really do.

An agent involved in the investigation ("Agent-1"), found the first few references to SR on the internet from somebody only identified as "altoid", attempting to promote the site in its beginning days, in January of 2011.

In October of the same year, a user also going by the name of "altoid" made a posting on Bitcoin Talk titled "a venture backed Bitcoin startup company", which directed interested users to "rossulbricht at gmail dot com".

That email address is what led to DPR's downfall.
Genius held over $60,000,000 worth of BTC.

My condolences to anyone who lost escrow monies or recently bought BTC.

In June 2013, Ulbricht allegedly logged into Silk Road from an Internet Cafe in San Francisco. From there the feds traced his Gmail logs and located his home, 500 feet away, on Hickory Street in San Francisco. They intercepted his mail and found he had allegedly been receiving fake IDs.

Agents visited him on July 26, 2013, and discovered his roommates knew him as "Josh." He declined to answer their questions.

In July 2013, the FBI located the Silk Road server and copied an image of it ? all its contents, in other words. They discovered 957,000 registered accounts on the server, of which at least 30% were from the U.S.

Things came to a head in early August, when the FBI arrested a man who was allegedly trading child pornography via a Tor-hosted site called Freedom Hosting.

At that point, "dark web" sites began going offline as users figured out that as much as 50% of the Tor network had been compromised by the feds.

The fact that Ulbricht was still online, and operating Silk Road, through September, is therefore surprising. he had ample warning the feds were after him as far back as June.

In fact, as the indictment against him makes clear, the feds were on to Silk Road back in January 2011. Their investigation discovered him allegedly trying to hire a hitman to take care of an extortionist in March 2013.

The bottom line is that if you were doing anything illegal on Tor or Silk Road for the last three years, you may be screwed.

SR vendors pay a fee to become vendors and there's also little fees charged during different transactions and so forth.

anexsia 10-02-2013 05:39 PM

It's like whack-a-mole, there's several other black market websites that weren't as popular as SR but are now seeing a huge increase of vendors and users making the transition.

Seems like a reasonably smart guy, but WTF was he thinking??

I just assumed SR and sites like it operated from Eastern Europe or some Third World place, not the country MOST LIKELY TO FIND YOU AND THROW THE BOOK AT YOU. Did he have a plan for when he inevitably got caught? Guess we'll find out.

Not that I personally think he was doing much, if anything, wrong... but use some common sense, man!

EDIT: Ahhh, I missed the part about trying to hire a hitman online, and also bragging about the other assassination he planned. He is just an idiot. http://www.slate.com/blogs/crime/201...astermind.html

That takes protecting user privacy to a "whole otha level!!"

I'm surprised he was living in SF and how did the feds shut down his servers so fast I would think they would be located offshore but maybe he was hosting from boxes in his own place

Translation - drug dealer puts out a hit on a snitch. Then brags online about the other guy he had killed.

The more I read about this guy the more it's apparent that he's either a complete dumbass or has a screw loose, probably both.
