Elevated X CMS Adds Streaming Video Support

The Elevated X CMS now has video streaming support!

We?ve added HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) which allows adaptive MP4 video file streaming and seeking ahead while watching a video on a Flash enabled PC or an IOS device without requiring the use of any server modules installed. Elevated X CMS powered web sites will now be able to offer streaming videos to iPhone and iPad users.

For devices that don't support HLS, the system will still serve a standard MP4 file, allowing the user experience to remain the same as it is now for CMS users with or without Wowza.

In addition to cost savings for Elevated X customers, there are some major benefits to web site viewers. Most importantly is the ability to adaptively stream to Apple devices, which represent an increasingly important target segment to streaming publishers. CMS customers without the optional video encoding add-on can manually create and upload their own HLS files. For CMS customers using optional automatic video encoding features, source video files are automatically cut into multiple files at different data rates and divided into short chunks for streaming delivery.

What this means in layman?s terms is that if you use Elevated X to run your web sites, your site will automatically deliver the correct size file to a viewer based on their connection speed. The video playback experience will be optimized for each viewer. The video bandwidth/quality adjustment also applies to iPad and iPhone users.

This addition is the first of a series of planned steps to make video viewing better for the users that make up the largest adult content buying markets.

Nice work AJ:), will this eliminate the need for Wowza media streaming?

Doubt it - nginx already support HLS via the RTMP module. Not sure how elevatedX is supporting HLS, but all HLS is a m3u8 file of directory of video chunks - maybe elevatedX does some crafty play to deliver mp4 chunks to a manifest, but it would be much wiser to offload streaming to say nginx or wowza.
When it comes to HLS streaming, nginx, wowza, and adobe's offering all do the same. Shame red5 didn't add it to their repertoire.
Maybe Andrew can comment how elevatedX performs HLS without these? Personally, I wouldn't like HLS passing through apache as it would hog a process during the streaming.

So do you charge extra for this also?
Also does this replace Wowza ($55 per month)?

Yes, unless you prefer to use a different server to deliver your content. This will replace Wowza functionality in the way most people who have the CMS use Wowza - it provides seek-ahead support and it lets the video player automatically adjust the quality of the stream based on bandwidth.

There is no extra charge for this if you have the optional video transcoding add-on.

See the reply above for the answer about Wowza.

Our primary HLS solution presents another option for users who don't want to spend the money to have another web server or RTMP server to serve content.

I unfortunately can't provide product support by way of GFY or a web forum. Please submit this question as support ticket and our staff will reply and help you get setup with the streaming.

Have a great weekend!
