Pope says atheists can get into Heaven now but .......

The Vatican has quickly clarified that atheists - they believe - are still going to hell, despite Pope Francis appearing to say non-believers could be saved through Christ if they do good.

A fairy tale claim makes news headlines.

In other news, the witch in the woods has expanded her parking spot on skull mountain to make room for her newly bought dragon to fit next to her flying broomstick.

One thing I don't understand about people who go to church and follow the bible.

There is a church near where I live, and every Sunday I see people going in or coming out. I see the same Vicar working there every week. Now not once have I ever seen this vicar murdered by these so called believers. Yet the bible clearly states, anybody who works on a Sunday be put to death by gods followers.

I just don't understand.

Choopa_Pardo 09-12-2013 09:44 AM

Finally a Pope I can support.

Sounds like a old testament text,as there saturday was still holy day,so you maybe read that instead.
Beside there is no point to bother anything with what is written in bible,as it full of nonsense, and when you confront people from curch about they say how a lot of things from bible shouldn't not to be taken from granted. And when it comes to full churches, the fact is how most of people who go there are not a practical believers, they go there because they have nothing to do/due tradition/or because someone bother them to go there.Still, religion comes handy as cheap alternative to shrink when you are in bad emotional shape :1orglaugh

dyna mo 09-12-2013 09:47 AM

why wouldn't christ save athiests? why would they be excluded from god's grace? sounds vindictive and mean-spirited. yay religion. if you don't believe then god cuts you off. hahaha. obvious is obvious.

crockett 09-12-2013 11:48 AM

I don't think you posted the full context.. It was atheists can now go to heaven if they do good and give the church 20% of their income. The do good part is optional with increased payments..

Overload 09-12-2013 12:03 PM

contradictions for experts: god's unconditional love is with you - as long as you follow christ

and, serious, we are ALL born atheists -- until someone starts telling us bullshit :2 cents:

i am so fucking happy i never went to church and kept my spiritual freedom ...

to ponder thoughts like this:
mind-twisting thought ... regarding the big chill ... OK, so we know that, the further away matter is, the faster it moves away from us - which led to the theory of the "big rip" (an acceleration of matter that - in the end - reaches a ratio of speed, when the sub-nuclear binding powers are overwhelmed and the matter is busted into bits and finally all energy is so widely distributed that it is no longer "usable") ... now, provided space expands faster than the speed of light (since there is no mass effecting it and the speed of light is outrun anyways) ... what if ... it only afflicted the outskirts of the (for us measurable) universe? in turn, it would reflect what happens to particles in the CERN hadro collider, right? particles emerge from the "bang" (with a certain power state) and die away as they loose their energy ... the reverse conclusion (based on what we see in the macrocosm) would only show that what happens on a small scale, is reflected on a big scale ... the particles emerge, expand (move away from their place of formation) and - over time - loose their energy and fade ... only that the macrocosm has more energy per particle (or, in this case, mass cluster) ... so, at some point of expansion, the rate of expansion reaches a point when the nuclear binding "loads" are no longer sufficient to "glue" the mass together ... IF that was the case, the "dark flow" would - in theory - be no longer needed for the equation (please correct me if i am assuming false physics) ...

winter_ 09-12-2013 12:25 PM

the pope pimp. the pope pimp has been running his girls out on the street preaching the good news.

so what does that mean in plain english and how would it affect the universe and our planet and lives positively or negatively?

bronco67 09-12-2013 01:03 PM

It's just funny that grown people are believing these fairy tales.

Mutt 09-12-2013 01:03 PM

I did some research and what the Pope said isn't so new - other Christian theologians have had the same view and the last pope, Benedict, wrote:

"With respect to the way in which the salvific grace of God ? which is always given by means of Christ in the Spirit and has a mysterious relationship to the Church ? comes to individual non-Christians, the Second Vatican Council limited itself to the statement that God bestows it "in ways known to himself"."

keep up the hating mutt.

The Church is the largest single charitable organisation in the country. Catholic Charities USA, its main charity, and its subsidiaries employ over 65,000 paid staff and serve over 10m people.

The Catholic Church has a nonprofit hospital system of 637 hospitals, which account for hospital treatment of 1 out of every 5 people — not just Catholics — in the United States today.

The Catholic Church has 230 colleges and universities in the U.S. with an enrollment of 700,000 students.

The Catholic Church educates 2.6 million students everyday at the cost to that church of $10 billion and a savings on the other hand to the American taxpayer of $18 billion. The graduates go on to graduate studies at the rate of 92 percent.

Lay off the Vatican
They have a real cool youth commission logo :upsidedow

All kidding aside, the Catholic hospital in this town is very nice and their prices are very fair. It's just this heaven and hell bullshit ... original sin, etc ...

JockoHomo 09-12-2013 02:17 PM

You don't have to believe in some fairy tale to have a moral compass and compassion for others. Those who do because they are afraid of the ramifications of their actions in the next life are not doing them for honest reasons.

Who has more integrity? The person who gives money to a charity because he wants to actually help others or a person who is doing what they think "God wants" and is buying a ticket to heaven...

What does that have to with this thread?

And do you really want to get into the 'contributions' to the world the Catholic Church has been responsible for in the past 2000 years?

Where do you think the Church got those billions? God magically wires funds into its bank accounts?

As part of the Saturnalia carnival throughout the 18th and 19th centuries CE, rabbis of the ghetto in Rome were forced to wear clownish outfits and march through the city streets to the jeers of the crowd, pelted by a variety of missiles. When the Jewish community of Rome sent a petition in1836 to Pope Gregory XVI begging him to stop the annual Saturnalia abuse of the Jewish community, he responded, ?It is not opportune to make any innovation.? On December 25, 1881, Christian leaders whipped the Polish masses into Antisemitic frenzies that led to riots across the country. In Warsaw 12 Jews were brutally murdered, huge numbers maimed, and many Jewish women were raped. Two million rubles worth of property was destroyed.

The believers can't prove God exists.
The non-believers can't prove God doesn't exist.
