Weird experience in Indiana

goodgirl is in Indiana visiting family. This evening she was photographing a river from a bridge. She noticed one raft go by with a couple on it. She then spotted another raft with no people on it, just an ice cooler; she took a few pics of it. She then noticed some people about a half mile behind it that were obviously swimming after the unmanned raft. The river was swift and the raft was going pretty quick.

When she got back to her room she zoomed in on the unmanned raft and noticed what appears to be an 8-9 year old boy, asleep in the raft.

I have a feeling this is going to have a bad ending.

Did anyone contacted local authorities, just called the local PD, or anything? Just to tell them what she was seeing?

Take a photo, post it on facebook, couple of likes and everything will turn out fine. While you're there you can even like a funny picture of a cat and cure cancer too :thumbsup

When she got back to her room and was going through the photos is when she noticed. She immediately called the cops who came over and took a report and had her send all the originals to them. They were not sure what they could do as it was 2 hours after the fact.

dyna mo: I have my doubts, Indiana is pretty flat around there . . . but they could have some decent rapids. There is also a dam, but I don't know the area well enough to know where it is in relation to them.

The thing that worried me is if the kid kept sleeping until dark (it was sunset). Eventually it would be too dark for anyone to see where any yells came from.

You make it sound like she casually went back to her room and never thought any more about it until she looked at the images. I assume she had no cell phone with her or no coverage or something. I think I would have been straight on the phone to the emergency services.

Yes, she did casually go back to her room, she did not see that there was a kid in it until she got to her monitor and could zoom in on the pic. She did not notice the kid, just the raft with the cooler and [later] people swimming after it

He isn't really noticeable unless you know he is there.

Ah, from the original post it sounded like she noticed the swimmers when she was taking the pics.

She noticed the swimmers, but they were pretty far behind the raft. She was photographing things in the area, including people floating down the river on rafts. She spotted an unmanned raft then noticed upstream a couple of people obviously swimming after it, she thought they were just trying to get their stuff back.

It wasn't until she got to her room that she realized what they were chasing. I thought the raft looked pretty flimsy for holding people.

It's really cool how me and you both read this thread but yet we both read a different original post.

In the one I read, it was like she had no clue until hours later.

It turns out she did notice them when she was taking the pics but didn't do anything about it.

Over a vast distance as described, fast moving current, strong enough to knock two adult parties off of
common swimming pool rafts would have certainly toppled the empty unsecured container into the water too.
This river appears to be moving stagnantly slow. My opinion is this story is overly exaggerated. :2 cents:

Indiana

That area of Indiana is beautiful, especially in the Fall. Newport car race is always a week or two before the Fall leaves.
Unfortunately my stolen laptop had the pics of Model A's lined up on a brick street under perfect Fall trees awaiting the race. To make it worse, it was a stereo photo.
I'm surprised you never posted pics of the Indiana covered bridges. Favorite being The Covered Bridge Restaurant in Cayuga.
Mom likes to tell people her grandmother was from Brazil. Then give the punchline, Brazil Indiana.
Sorry for the ramblings

Not sure I have ever seen a covered bridge in IN; if I had, I am pretty sure I would have photographed it.

Sunny Day 09-06-2013 03:11 PM

Covered Bridges

In Parke & Vermillion Counties have more covered bridges than Madison Iowa. One park alone has 5 they have moved there.

I am not in Indiana and have zero intentions of ever returning there.
