Does anyone still care about WMV videos?

i am thinking of killing the WMV option in my shop - does anyone still care about that format?

Nowadays every computer and every other device should play MP4 - so what reason would there be to keep WMV?

Yes, stick with MP4 as the container and H.264 video format.

I use WMV for my sample galleries.

MP4 is good to re-encode and to offer different option. But WMV is easier to edit and to manipulate on the go, for me.

Also, users in windows can open WMV easier, just with one click on the gallery... However to open the MP4 you either need to download the file to your computer, or do some dilligent configuration.

Of course if you offer MP4 in very good quality, webmasters will need to re-encode to WMV.

Just one question, if I buy some content, do you currently deliver both formats? Or you currently deliver only WMV and you are looking to switch to MP4?..

i offer currently both but when i do custom encoding or deliver by FTP on request, i do MP4 only and not a single client has asked for WMV in the last 2 years

we use the H264 codec for MP4 and our files are ready for streaming - and yeah, if you really would need WMV, you could still re-encode them from the MP4 files of course

MP4 for the win. Using WMV is more of a habit than anything.

MP4 for my sites/content sales...although I make other format versions currently for C4S use...

Microsoft is the only one left that uses them and they are probably switching to MP4 also.

And photos. Lots and lots and lots of photos, even for niche video sites where photos would not make any sense.

MP4 with H.264 is all we use and build around now. Since we have 4K cameras, we've also been following the progress of H.265/HEVC.

NaughtyRob 08-30-2013 09:14 AM

I have been selling .mp4 for the past two years at least. Nobody ever asks for wmv

We phased out WMV some time ago, MP4 is our standard internet format. There's no need for anything else at the moment in my opinion. Still do MPEG for broadcast but those are custom anyway.

yeah, i thought so, i just pulled the plug on this...

thanks!
