Ebay WTF?

Starting Bid £20

Buy It Now £30

Sells for £32

That was my experience today :upsidedow Pretty good though as I was the seller :thumbsup

So, can a GFY eBay expert let me know at which point the Buy It Now option disappeared, would it have been when the bidding got to exactly £30?

woj 08-26-2013 03:04 PM

after first bid?

nexcom28 08-26-2013 03:04 PM

Don't know but you probably paid the best part of £5 in fees

Impressive! I knew a woman who saw eBay as a competition so would want to win just for the sake of beating the rest, regardless of the price

Normally buy it now disappears after the first bid is made.

Back in my storage unit buying days I found a stuffed Christmas bear that Walmart puts out every year. They all look the same, but the bear is holding a sign that has the year on it. This one was from 2000 (it was 2009 when I sold it). I saw them going for about $25-$35 so I put my up with a buy it now for $100 and someone actually took it. They likely could have had it for around $35 if they just bid on it, but I guess they wanted it bad.

Ahhh....I see what's happened now, it was Tickets :thumbsup

"In some categories, the Buy It Now option is available until bids reach or exceed 50% of the Buy It Now price:

Cell Phones & Accessories

Clothing, Shoes & Accessories

Motors Parts & Accessories

Tickets

i didn't think the buy now button went away in that situation, i *assumed* bidders were just blinded by emotion and lose track. i was watching a microphone this weekend, a used one bidded up to $101 + shipping when a brand new one of the same model went for buy noe $99 free shipping was also available. weird.

i'm ruthless on ebay. the negotiations start after i win and receive the item. not usually with used gear but usually always with *new* gear. it's never really new and the sellers usually misrepresent it in someway, i'm going to haggle that or return the item. and ebay is there to support me every step of the way. usually works out to 20%+ off the bid price.

i'm sure pure sellers hate it, but the other huge factor in this is how piss poor seller customer service and communication is. i've opened cases about item i won, and 2x the seller never replied, guess what, i got all my money back and got to keep the items via ebay, automatically.

there are very few sellers on ebay that get how to do cs, i would think they are losing out bigtime and could hopefully learn from bidders like me who will haggle the price after getting to view the item first hand.

I am always amazed when people try to tell you something is new when it isn't. I also had a few people buy stuff from me, then break it or damage it when they got it and try to return it to me for a refund.

I'm pretty sure that is what it was. They are a very in demand thing and people want a bear for each year. I saw a few others for the year I was selling up, but this person clearly was willing to pay more to make sure they got it.

aye, there's the rub.

i reached my witt's end a couple months ago after buying something sold as brand new only to run the serial # and find out it was manufactured in 2011. i had never opened a case until then, usually just blowing off the chips, stains, etc, not listed, but after that changed my attitude. i document unpacking with a camera these days and support my case with photos the minute the shipment arrives, etc, let ebay sort it out. they do a great job. also, it's usually not with individual sellers, i find them the best sellers, it's the big retail ops that buy shit 2nd hand and sell it new because it has a tag on it.

dyna mo 08-26-2013 03:49 PM

here's a current example, this was a bass guitar i bought as brand new, in the box, never played, hang tags on it, etc.

these are magic marker marks accidently left on the neck of the guitar by the manufacturer, discovered these when i opened the box

I have had similar situations with some of the big retail outlets. I bought a tablet computer for my niece for Christmas last year. After the order is made I am told that they have a backlog and there will be a short delay. I was fine with that. They then send me a tracking number. Two weeks later it still hasn't arrived. I contact them and they tell me not only had it arrived, but I had signed for it. That was not the case. As it turns out the seller had an incomplete address on the box. Fed Ex looked me up in their system and delivered the package. The problem was they delivered it to my old address that I haven't lived at in more than 7 years.

I went to that place to see if they got the package and the people living there said no. I contact Fed Ex and they go out there and find that they did have the package and they had opened it up and played with the tablet. So I contact the seller. They apologize and promise to send me a new one and I will ship the old one back to them. The new one arrives a week later, I send the old one back, all is good.

a few weeks later at Christmas my niece opens it up and it is clearly a used computer. It is supposed to have a stylus, a bracket you can snap on the back so it stands up and an extra memory stick. None of that is in the case and the tablet is smudged up. I contact them, pissed off as I just gave my niece a used item for Christmas, and they promise to send me a brand new one. When it arrives I open it up, it is missing the stylus and is clearly used. At that point I was done. At least they gave me money back with no hassle , but I had spent two months now shipping things back and forth to them. I wonder how many people bought these "new" tablets and just decided to keep them because it was easier than dealing with sending it back.

oh man. whew, i'm glad you got upset about that. i would have played it cool in front of my niece, then gone to a place where she couldn't see me flip out and let that seller have it big time! :1orglaugh:1orglaugh

your story really shows how poor the cs is,
like with this bass, the first reply was "oh, we see that all the time on guitars, no biggie." hahahahah, not even a nice try.

Lol I love their reply. "We always have that kind of stuff on new guitars." as if you are an idiot.

With the tablet when I emailed them to tell them it was used and missing parts they tried to tell me it was new and the fingerprints and missing parts were because it must have been "randomly chosen" for a quality inspection.

it's stunning how often this is the course of action, why not they start with an apology? or even an oops would be fine. hell, if these guys told me they had bought a shitton of bass guitars in boxes and hadn't looked em over carefully, sorry about that, can we send you seom nice bass strings to offset that? i would prolly say cool.

but to make it my fault and it's because i'm an idiot is going to get me fighting hard to get that item heavily discounted before i have to send it back.
they are going to waste a lot of time dealing with me at the very least, strings are going to seem like cheap dream to them when i'm finished getting this sorted! :1orglaugh

hah, i just scanned my ebay cases and not 1 single time has the seller offered a solution voluntarily, each and every time the issue has been attemtped to be blown off or ignored, so i escalate and let ebay come down on them.

I was pretty lucky when I bought storage lockers I sold a lot of stuff on ebay and only had a few issues. One was with a computer I sold a guy. I think he either dropped it and damaged it or just changed his mind and made excuses to return it. He smashed a huge dent in the case and reported me to ebay when I wouldn't refund his shipping fee. Ebay sided with. I had a couple of times when something arrived broken, but normally I got insurance on things when I shipped them so I was able to make a claim and get reimbursed for it.

The biggest pain was the computer guy. If he changed his mind he could have just said so and I would have taken the computer back and refunded his money. he didn't need to smash it and then try to pull one over on me.

dyna mo 08-26-2013 06:02 PM

yeah, that's not cool. for individaul sellers especially taking a hit like that could wipe someone out, a lot of private sellers are selling to make rent it seems.
