thanks for the referral

Digital Ocean sucks balls. If those drives are SSDs, they have some massive configuration problems. I/O performance is terrible.

I prefer Linode on the high end, but you can't beat the low end prices of Digital Ocean. Both are great!

I am using. They are perfect. The only problem is that they are made for developers.

Does that mean they are not novice friendly such as control panel installs of scripts and what not?

jimmycastor 08-22-2013 05:08 PM

no what a luck, no control panel, no autoinstaller,
you have to setup a box on your own from scratch, even compiling the source code
of a linux distribution

so move on and leave them to the pros
they are allready overused and have constant breakdowns and network maintainance

Aidoru 08-22-2013 07:00 PM

Linode :thumbsup

I don't find them all that bad..

SATA Raid5 (dedicated):
/dev/sda5:
Timing cached reads: 14716 MB in 1.99 seconds = 7376.59 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 322 MB in 3.00 seconds = 107.23 MB/sec

Digital ocean (VPS):
Timing cached reads: 11994 MB in 2.00 seconds = 6004.13 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 1172 MB in 3.00 seconds = 390.28 MB/sec

Local SSD (old shitty machine):
/dev/sdb1:
Timing cached reads: 2352 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1175.72 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 676 MB in 3.00 seconds = 225.01 MB/sec

Random VPS:
/dev/mapper/vg_web03-lv_root:
Timing cached reads: 5500 MB in 2.00 seconds = 2753.36 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 160 MB in 3.01 seconds = 53.12 MB/sec

You can buy a WHM/cPanel license online from BuyCPanel and install it (just one line of code to execute - or they can install it for you for free) and there you go...

from there you can do it everything from GUI and there's tons of resources online...
