It's her loss. IMHO. 90+ percent of humans thought the world was flat at one time too. And if you believed that the Earth was NOT the center of the universe you could be tortured and killed by... the catholic church. Why would she support such a thing? She's most likely coming from a place of love, as misguided as it is. My family consists of fellow atheists, but I can understand your pain.

The concept of a fiery Hell is a concoction of the Roman Catholic church to scare simple minded people. There is no mention of or allusion to Hell or purgatory in the actual Bible.

The same for Heaven, it's not in the Bible. The Bible is filled with dramatic metaphors and ancient language where words had different meanings than they have today making it easy for the Church to convince the simple among us that the Bible means what the Church wants it to mean.

What the Bible really says is that when we die, whether we be good or evil, we sleep, cut off from everything. The good will one day be resurrected from their graves, there will be no more death, and the evil will remain asleep.

It boggles my mind that in 2013 there is anybody left on this planet who takes the Old or New Testament literally.
