Russia Warns of Iraq War Resolution Veto

Russia is ready to veto a U.S.-British resolution in the U.N. Security Council authorizing use of force against Iraq if such a step is needed to preserve "international stability," Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov said Friday.

"Russia has the right to a veto in the U.N. Security Council and will use it if it is necessary in the interests of international stability," Ivanov said at a news conference in Beijing.

The foreign minister's comments came a day after China and Russia issued a joint declaration saying war with Iraq "can and should be avoided" and appealing for more time for U.N. weapons inspectors there.

The United States is seeking votes to support a U.N. Security Council resolution authorizing war. France and Russia both permanent council members with veto power over U.N. activities as well as Germany are pushing a plan to continue weapons inspections for four more months.

"Of course, if you use the veto power you should fully understand the responsibilities of it before using it. It can only be used for international peace and stability," Ivanov said. "At the same time Russia will not be in favor of any new resolution which allows the use of military force directly or indirectly to solve the Iraqi issue."

Without trying to start another thread aguing over when war would or would not be justified, has anyone else noticed that the Rush Limbaugh crowd has a great excuse for why every single country in the world doesn't want war under the same terms Bush does?

France has a business deal so they don't want war.

Russia doesn't have a business deal so they don't want war.

Germany are a bunch of nazis so they don't want war.

Mexico doesn't want war because....

Australia doesn't want war because....

80% of people in the UK don't want war because....

65% of Americans don't want war without UN approval because...

They have a reason why every country, and even the majority of people in America, are corrupt for not wanting war right now.

Apparently, the only person in the whole world who is doing what he is doing for the right reasons, out of pure goodness and righteousness, and who is beyond reproach, is in the White House. What a stroke of luck!

Russia is pretending to be against this so we will be able to launch with Saddam's guard down. This is the most publicized invasion ever. The only possible way to have the element of surprise when we go is via deception.

Interesting theory....although I think the fact that Russia has long been Iraq's #1 supplier of weapons might also have something to do with...they've been cozy bedfellow for awhile. Incidentally, France quickly became #2 and in fact sold the fixin's for a nuclear reactor to Iraq.
