Sucks man, use one of those backup on the fly programs. Like iDrive.

DamianJ 08-15-2013 08:58 AM

Carbonite
Crashplan

Automatic, continual backup in the cloud.

If you just did it and you aren't on a weird setup like encrypted drives you might be able to get it back.

If you haven't turned off the computer and it just happened it might also be worth saving a memory dump and any swap file for later analysis. You have a good chance actually -- if it's that important.

freecartoonporn 08-15-2013 11:36 AM

yes, on linux, all the time and via fucking ftp.

wehateporn 08-15-2013 11:39 AM

Since this is coming from Fris (i.e. technical type), I'm assuming it's not possible to 'undelete' it or else you'd already have done that.

If it's on your HDD - have Recuva installed and just get it back right away...

Also do all your development in Drobpox foler since you have history of 30 changes :)

just my :2 cents:

I've been in a bad habit the last few years of using shift+delete, instead of putting stuff in the recycle bin.

It's bitten me a couple of times.

Did that last week, It was saved in Excel. Tried everything to recover it including recuva. Thought MS auto saved things these days like wordpress.

CaptainHowdy 08-16-2013 12:16 PM

I hate it when I delete things I've never done in order to make up an excuse for not having them...

96ukssob 08-16-2013 01:42 PM

I was working on a PPT for a demo of our program... spent almost 3 solid days working on it and saved it to my desktop. I thought I had moved it to dropbox and deleted it then emptied my trash

Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo pissed.

You could try cat/more/less on the entire drive device to search for a specific string you know is in your source. I did this once when I stupidly deleted source.c instead of the compiled executable. Took a while to sift through 300GB of data, but I found and recovered it.

edit: now I think about it, I believe it was something more stupid, like gcc -o source.c source.c, which overwrites the original source with the compiled program. hurrrr
