What's it mean when your computer starts whirring and locks up then shuts down?

Sometimes when I'm working my comuter just starts making a light whirring sound from the inside and my desktop freezes up, then a minute later my machine shuts down or I get that blue screen.

Does that sound like a power surge?

hard drive issues. backup ur shit NOW

twistyneck 02-27-2003 09:20 PM

No, it means that your electrons are seizing up. Usually what I do is give the motherboard a light spritzing of water - use DISTILLED water only though. That will loosen them up.

u got hacked. disconnected from your cable modem ASAP .

Vox 02-27-2003 09:23 PM

Maybe it's over heating. I had a computer die on me 2 months ago when the fan stopped working and overheated the power box.

damac 02-27-2003 09:25 PM

I would also say hard drive. Go to your drive makers site and get a utility to test out the drive. It might come back with an error code so you can send it back for a return. Maybe bad sectors or its dying. Either way I would return it.

I'd call the FBI and the bomb squad.
Sounds like that bomb in the movie Excutive Decision with Kurt Russell.

That fucker is gonna blow.

Big brother has a cruel sense of humor.

BluMedia 02-27-2003 09:33 PM

I think that is normal for a computer running Windows.

Marcus 02-27-2003 09:38 PM

btw this is an HP machine running XP in case anyone was thinking about getting one.
I'll never buy an HP again.

BluMedia 02-27-2003 10:07 PM

HP here with no problems but then again I know some people that have had problems with HP. Haven't had a single problem with mine.

Could also be wires getting to close to the CPU fan. I had that happen once. Most likely though its your hard drive telling you I'm about to go to Heaven.

Lane 02-27-2003 11:26 PM

my CPU is running on 140F , 24/7

Marcus 02-27-2003 11:30 PM

Fuck, I bought an external hd but it needs a firewire card and I dont have one. I thought it was USB.

hope it's stable until tomorrow, it's been crashing every 30 minutes

lightswitch 02-28-2003 01:11 AM

sounds liek you might be over heating, check your fans, including the powersupply one.

iwantchixx 02-28-2003 01:15 AM

I'd check the cpu fan to see if it's seizing up. If it was hard drive issues bad enough to cause that, it wouldn't start at all.

happened to me last year as well and the symptoms you are describing sound the same...

Phil21 02-28-2003 02:01 AM

Could be hard drive, or like the other said heating issues.

Heating is easy.

take off the case and boot the sucker up. Look at all the fans and make sure they are spinning. If not, that's probably it right there.

If everything looks cool, then backup your shit, and/or have a geek friend come over and look at it.

More than likely...its the fan thats causing the over heating.
Also check your fan on your power supply.
Very common problem.

Probably clugged up with shit.

get ya a can of compressed air and blow out all the dust bunnies inside your computer and fans.
It may take care of the proble
