Actually the beginning of the X rating has it's origins in mainstream film, it was what we would consider a hard R and even that has changed.

One film like Midnight Cowboy was rated X when it was first released, they have now even shown that movie uncut, uncensored on network television...I remember back in 1991 they did this in Los Angeles and they made a big deal because of how much things have changed.

The X rating was co-opted by the adult industry which started rating things XXX ...guess a lot of people didn't know this :)

FYI: The term X comes form X-Censored. This is an early term that meant it was harder than R but not released to a theatre. Theatre releases harder than R were NC-17.
