Fuck you Fox News

Why does ANYONE pay attention to these idiots?

Check this out:

NASA reports that the Sun's Magnetic Polarity is about to flip:

http://science.nasa.gov/science-news...aug_fieldflip/

Quote:

Solar physicist Phil Scherrer, also at Stanford, describes what happens: "The sun's polar magnetic fields weaken, go to zero, and then emerge again with the opposite polarity. This is a regular part of the solar cycle."

Now, here is how the fuckheads at Fox News report the exact same story:

http://www.foxnews.com/science/2013/...-peak-in-2013/

But with no kidding, words including Perfect Solar Storm, Eruptions, Massive, Extensive Damage, High Radiation, etc...

Quote:

...But what if a big solar flare shot our way? High-voltage transformers that handle tremendous amounts of electrical power take months to build -- and they're built on demand. Should these transformers be destroyed by a solar flare, localized power outage issues could take years to solve.
If there was ever proof that Fox slants news reports to keep people in a constant state of fear, this is it.

FOX: There’s nothing that mankind can do to prevent the storm. But humanity can prepare.

I can picture some idiots panicking already...

Jman 08-06-2013 08:47 AM

Why do you even read or watch fox news buddy ;)

seeandsee 08-06-2013 08:56 AM

when will this happen, i expect movie about it :)

Colmike9 08-06-2013 09:08 AM

Fox is for cartoons, not the news.. :2 cents:

Imagine what they would say if they knew that the magnetic polarity does the same thing on Earth..

Rochard 08-06-2013 09:09 AM

Why does anyone watch fox?

People (Idiots) love to be shocked and outraged. :2 cents:

Ferus 08-06-2013 09:17 AM

Fox wants two reactions, just like most politicians;
- sheep that follows
- oposition they can debate and fight

Just ignore and move along. And stop giving them free backlinks.

Sly 08-06-2013 09:19 AM

I don't like Fox news. I don't like MSNBC. I don't like CNN.

I don't watch any of them.

Seems quite simple to me. Apparently not.

I try to read and watch them all.
They all slant things, and mostly the Headlines to get you to read the article.
Most have also looked so dumb, I say see the Movie Idiocracy..

Who do you suggest to watch?

bronco67 08-06-2013 09:24 AM

I watch Fox News for a laugh sometimes. It only takes about 2 minutes before they say something hilarious.

Fox News is not the place to go for science reporting. This is a much better place for science news: http://www.scientificamerican.com/

newB 08-06-2013 10:05 AM

I don't watch FoxNews for the reason's you mention.

That said, an intense solar flare pointed at us does pose a credible threat. Read up on the Carrington Event, when one such situation happened. Now, think about what that would mean today when we are much more dependent on electricity and satellites than we were then.

mikesouth 08-06-2013 10:06 AM

Im no fan of Fox news but.

If you know your solar physics you know that the sun is on an 11 year cycle for increased solar flare activity, that 11 year cycle corresponds directly to the same 11 year cycle the sun has for its magnetic field swapping polarity. The physics are extremely complicated but the swapping of the magnetic field does increase the emission of solar flares and increased solar activity that can and does cause widespread blackouts when it happens to be on a collision path with earth.

It also causes the Northern Lights to be visible as far south as Washington DC under the right circumstances

mikesouth 08-06-2013 10:08 AM

For the record NOAA monitors these solar flares and issues warnings to power companies so that they can take measures to counter them older satellites are on their own

That's when the Earth's magnetic field weakens during the shift, not the sun, right?..

No. During the Carrington Event, the northern lights were reported to have been seen in Cuba.

MaDalton 08-06-2013 10:22 AM

This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius...

Probably Manwin caused those solar flares, someone might want to look into that

Evil Chris 08-06-2013 10:24 AM

This page is very good for predicting aurora borealis sighting.

baddog 08-06-2013 10:26 AM

I will never understand the mentality that causes people like Prince to watch programming he hates.

_Richard_ 08-06-2013 10:27 AM

ironically, NASA scientist downplayed it, fox news reported it correctly.

to say this will cause only '2 billion' in damage, is significantly under reporting what is going on.

Quote:

The earth´s magnetic field is weaker at either the southern or northern pole and hence the particles enter the earth´s atmosphere and collide with the particles at the north or south poles. These collisions emit the dancing lights we know as Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights. Most often the dancing happens at the height of 50-60 miles, but can go as high as 400-450 miles above the earth´s surface.

The best time to see the northern lights are normally in the winter time. The long periods of darkness and often the clear nights provide us with many opportunities to watching the northern lights dancing in the sky. Research has also shown that auroral activity is cyclic, and peaking every 11 years. Next peak is going to be around 2013.
When the Earth's poles shift, they weaken the most about halfway through the cycle and causes stronger Northern Lights. :thumbsup

I guess stronger sun flares can do it, too... :upsidedow

Yeah, a weaker magnetic field would have the same result since the aurora is caused by charged particles entering the atmosphere. My response before was more in terms of what MikeSouth had written concerning it being more widely visible as a direct result of the increased barrage of particles.

Robbie 08-06-2013 10:46 AM

I can tell you why people watch Fox News....

I watch the news channels at night before I go to bed. They are all showing "re-runs" of their "news" shows from that day.

So last night I had Anderson Cooper 360 on CNN and OReilly on FNC.

OReilly drives me nuts when he starts pontificating...but last night he had a woman guest hosting for him.

Anyway...I tuned in a the start of the shows.
Anderson Coopers TOP STORY: ARod and his suspension from baseball for steroids. :(

I switched channels to FNC. Top story on OReilly: The closing of the consuls on the African continent. The guests were former CIA and NSA top people. They went in depth on the story.

At 20 minutes after the beginning of the show I switched back to see what CNN was doing.
Anderson was interviewing an ex-steroid dealer who was discussing how easy it was over the years to get baseball players some fucking testosterone. :(

And THAT is why people watch Fox News. Sometimes they are the only ones following a real story. Not all the time of course. But just saying. Instead of you going berserk CONSTANTLY about Fox News...maybe you should just actually watch it sometimes instead of cherry picking the occassional dumb shit that happens on any 24 hour a day cable network news show

xNetworx 08-06-2013 11:02 AM

Wait, people here still watch cable news other than when there is a mega disaster?

You mean "Faux" News.. lol

Sometimes I flip between The Daily Show and Fox, and while I know The Daily Show is more accurate, the ironic thing is I end up having a hard time deciding which is funnier. lol

Tom_PM 08-06-2013 11:24 AM

It's REALLY nice just using a good old antenna to receive television programming. I switched to it long ago and it's like breathing mountain air. Also free, but mainly it clears the head of a lot of nonsense. Truth doesn't require believers. Some of these TV channels do though. Take the hint, haha.

I don't...! but after I read the first article at Nasa.gov I googled it to look for more, and sure enough, Fox News appeared on the first page of the Google results.

Of course it does: It can affect Satellites, cellphones and even knock out power like it did here in Quebec a long time ago.

What's more important is that this is a cycle that happens every 11 years or so. Whats important is that if you live far enough north, you can get a pretty nice light show. What's stupid as hell is Fox using a natural and recurring event to scare the stupid.
