It was one of those great songs that got way overplayed when it came out but a true gem.

Side note: As I was playing this my bird is freaking out. He apparently loves this song. He has a few favorites including some dance, trance, Beatles and of course Yo Gabba Gabba

I saw that last night and spent a little time listening to some of their other songs. They are very good and judging by the number of views they are getting they must be making at least some decent money from Youtube.

I'm not sure they can monetize the song "Africa" on Google since it's not their song can they?

Sure, it's labeled a cover. I'm pretty sure Toto isn't banging down their door. If anything, the nostalgia probably is raking in iTunes sales periodically

Just because it's a cover doesn't mean that somebody other than the guy who wrote the song should be able to get royalties from it right?

Playing it in a cover band in a pizza joint is one thing...but putting that monetizing Google link on it would be a whole other ball of wax I think.

The way I understand it is that the original copyright holder has a few options. They can have it removed, they can let it stay and let the person doing the cover make money from it or they can let it stay, but they get the revenue from it.

I was reading how that Gangnam style guy made a few million dollars because he got paid all the youtube income from the different covers and versions of it that people put up.
