Alternatives to google analytics?
 

We are looking for an alternatives to google analytics. Maybe you can share with your experience, are there any more good programs ?

local (installed on your server): piwik

without extra load for your server or your visitors: awstats on your raw server logs

AWStats is far from no extra load...also it counts bot traffic, hits to images directly, etc. I've seen as much as 4-5x the traffic on AWStats as GA reports.

Never had probs with awstats personaly... Numbers are more or less equal to GA... You do have to use the correct config files tough...

I know awstats can run for a couple of minutes if you only run it 2 or 3 times/day, but for the rest of the time it has 0 load... If it botthers you, you can even run it on a dedicated machine... In case you don't like it, there is also webalizer to process you raw logs...

In terms of costs, there's not really an alternative!

awstats and webalizer suck and are far from correct.
Piwik is great, but if you do serious traffic you'll need a heavy ass server

For load you should use 'nice' in the crontab entry for it. Plus you can specify when it runs obviously.

It does leave a little to be desired with the reporting, I agree. But for someone who just needs basic numbers it does the trick.

It would be cool to see more plugins for awstats so it can remain light (it runs batched and generates static pages) while fixing some of its stat reporting shortcomings. For example projections would be cool as would better hourly or weekly stats where reports are ran frequently enough.
